One of the many quirks, Welcome to the wonderful world of Gibson basses.
I have the short scale La Bella Deep Talkin' Bass 760FS-B-S stainless steel flat wound set (.045, .065, .085, .105, .128) on my Wombat 5er. The B string plays and sounds great.
If you're thinking of using the BEAD strings from a 5 string set on a 4 string SG, you may need to recut the nut. If you do, there's no going back. You'd just have to replace the nut if you decide to go back to EADG.
Thanks! That's unfortunate about the RX since, DR makes a 5 string set so maybe I'll try that but yeah I'm not sure I want to cut mess with the nut on my favorite bass. Maybe I'll "borrow" one of ibanez's short scale 5s from somewhere with a good return policy and see how I like the short BI agree that a heavier normal string will work. I'd recommend buying the Short Scale one, as the Long Scale one may break at the tuner due to increased gauge/stiffness. One string I wouldn't recommend is La Bella Rx Steel, as even its normal E string is a bit flabby.
Just be aware the short scale B strings can sound really good on some basses and terrible on others. The string choice also makes a big difference. Do the test to see if you even like it, but don't assume that the results are definitive. The B string in my Form Factor Wombat 5er, strung with short scale La Bella DTFs (.128T (tapered)) is solid up and down the neck. Love it!Thanks! I just got a new SG bass. Very happy with it but I do have one question since I’ve never owned a Gibson bass before. There’s a slight ridge I can feel where the fingerboard meets the neck. Is this typical? It doesn’t interfere with playing and I’ve seen what looks like the same thing in some other pics.
This pic of my bass shows it a little. Ignore the white stuff. It wiped right off and was some kind of wax. Thanks!

Welcome aboard! Can we offer you a number? This is a club I’ve wanted to join since I was a teenager! Hey, getting in at 31 is close enough right?
Wanted a bass in this style ever since I discovered Jack Bruce and watched the footage of Cream playing at Revolution Club. I thought Jack looked so cool with his EB-3 along with the cigarette in his headstock haha.
