Stately, eerie, funky, very funny. Reggie Workman with Sonny Fortune, a long, long time ago:
To each their own -- but I can't understand why anyone would add a backbeat to a tune like that. I think the intention is to sound current (?) but it just screams 8th grade jazz band to me.I don't get it.. care to explain ?
hook'em horns! This is the one I came to post. I tried to “cover” that solo in a combo class in college. Boy, I’m glad there are no recordings of it. Or if there are they are so deep in the University of Texas music school archive that they will never be found.
Ah, I see what you mean. It didn't bother me, I find it rather funny. But I understand your point of view. I love the bass drum tone thoughTo each their own -- but I can't understand why anyone would add a backbeat to a tune like that. Ear Protection is often necessary, as well.eye protection needed on arco solos.
I listen to Sam, Mononeon, and Thundercat too. We don’t have to restrict ourselves to our own era, I think. Great music doesn’t belong to an era or generation I also think. There’s no reason to think of Paul Chambers (for example) as somehow less relevant because he’s not current, or to listen to him as merely some kind of exercise. I know there are other modes of thinking, and mine is probably not the most prevalent.Ooh, Paul Chambers!
I love Thelonius Monk. I guess I just don't listen to enough oldies, trapped in my world of Thundercat, Mononenon, and Sam Wilkes as a younger lad.
Someone already got Christian McBride, but here's another one that makes me fall out of my chair:
I feel bad for Russel having to follow that.
Maybe more Christian? But this time Edgar on arco
I couldn't think of any good arco solos from Charles Mingus, but I'm sure they're out there.
Great solo, and a great project and goal to cop for someone learning the art. Kudos. What era were you at NT?This is the one I came to post. I tried to “cover” that solo in a combo class in college.
