Single 1x15" or 2x10" Cab Gigging: Floor or Stand? (Orange OBC115 Content, too)

I have one of the RS7000-type stands available as well. If I go to a single 1x12, I think it will be a decent fit, especially when you turn the brackets around to where the forks are almost parallel to the floor. However, I don't wanna trust it to my full-sized rig. Like someone else said, our guys jump/move around a lot (myself included) and I don't see it being stable enough for the Genz Uber 410.

One thing I was also looking into was a drywall step ladder like this: https://www.amazon.com/Best-Choice-Products-Aluminum-Platform/dp/B0112YJ3XC It's a little long (never heard that before), but just about right every other way. And half as much as the "T" stand.

I carry my amp and cables in a flight case that measures about 16"x20"x6". The flight case is a great size to set a single cab on top, raises it up just the right amount.

Plus, with that setup I'm carrying one less thing versus a separate stand.

LDS 15/6 on top of its road case. I never worry about enough low end with it. I tried it on the floor and in the road case tray when I first got it. I was not fond of it. Put it up high, and love it.

I'm starting to think a case for the cabinet might not be a horrible idea for this reason, not to mention the caster wheels. My only reservation is the cabinet itself is about 65 pounds so I'd have to get a lighter case for it, at least lighter than a full on ATA case would be, as I would have to dead lift it into the back of our SUV. I wish we had a pickup truck with a bed cap and an aluminum ramp!

One of my experiments will be throwing the cabinet on my SKB iSeries rolling case I already use for my amp head, pedals, and cables. Mine is about 12-13" tall when laid flat horizontally, which should give the 20.5" tall cabinet a nice boost, so we'll see how it sounds. FedEx says it's out for delivery!

Hi voided3 :)

Depending on the room and the stage, I have my 115 cab on the floor or on a beercrate :D

those are stable...even two of them stacked...

(as long as you share the beers with the band and don't drink them all alone ;))

may the bass be with you

I've seen those and thought about them. Only thing I worry about is my amp sliding off. I use a 4-space rack with amp, tuner, and wireless. I'm afraid it'll slide of the back of the cabinet, especially if I tilt the rig to the point where it's aimed at my head on small, shallow stages.

What about 2 Ampwedges? One could go under Rack to level it back out.

I gig with a single 15 all the time and I just leave it on the floor but, I'm in a trio and we don't play all that loud. To move it off the floor, I just use a pr milk crates I bought at the Dollar store. I store mic/speaker cords in them.

The moment of truth! My Orange OBC115 arrived this evening. Initial testing proves this cabinet to be an absolute sound cannon; it has a deep low end that goes up to a strong upper mid content, then rolls off after rather sharply. I did a quick side by side with one of my Rumble v3 2x10 cabinets and the Orange's more round, vintage voice contrasts greatly with the Rumble's comparatively even, almost hi-fi (in comparison) sound. I feel like I could get away with having my Tone Hammer DI's AGS circuit disengaged with this cabinet and still cut through the mix like a knife (in fact, I found myself rolling off some of the upper mids with the Tone Hammer to even out the sound). I have a gig coming up this weekend, which will be trial by fire, so I will reserve further comment on the Orange cabinet's performance until afterwards. Also, the Rumble cabs are still keepers, so don't interpret this as me putting them down at all; just another tool in the box!

As for the main topic of this thread, I tested the Orange 1) flat on the floor, 2) on the floor propped up with door stops, 3) on top of my SKB utility case, and 4) on my On-Stage RS7000 amp stand. Flat on the floor, it felt like an earthquake but lost definition. Due to the cabinet's more than 18" depth, the doorstops don't angle it up very much to make an appreciable difference (they do with my 10.5" deep guitar cabinet, though). The cabinet had LOTS of volume and definition raised up on the stand, but it's simply too big to fit safely on it, even turned on its side (port facing downward). I would definitely need a T-stand or flight case lid to safely raise this cab.

The winner for my at home testing was on top of the SKB utility case. It still had the lows, slightly better definition, and is perfectly stable. Plus I already haul the thing with me to every gig so it has that going for it! I'm also betting it'll be good for those hollow stages and wood floors to avoid hearing structural damage happening to the building over the sound of the amp. That said, I may still consider a T-stand down the road if I find myself running out of headroom with the Orange, but I doubt I will.

And now, pictures or it didn't happen! You can copy my amp and pedal settings, if you like :D

Gig Report: I used the Aguilar pedals + Fender amp + Orange cab setup pictured above, elevated on the SKB case, on a gig yesterday for a large outdoor tent wedding gig (about 220-240 people). Our 10-piece Motown/R&B/funk band was setup on a slightly elevated stage platform and everything was run through FOH sound, but no bass, guitar, or drums in the monitors.

I was pleasantly surprised by how punchy and loud the cabinet is for its somewhat small footprint, yet how deep the low end was at stage volume (it comfortably handled me playing down to a low B using the octave pedal with my P-bass). I never had to turn the Rumble head up past half volume the whole night with its EQ set at noon, except for the bass which I set slightly lower at 11 'o clock (still sounds plenty deep). On account of the Kappa 15A's strong upper midrange, I even had the upper mids dialed back a bit on the Tone Hammer DI and still could cut through nicely.

At least with this particular cabinet, I didn't experience any adverse affects to the low end response by elevating it. It also seems to be an ideal height as it's high enough to hear it, but low enough that it's not hitting the vocal/horn mics. I'm looking forward to gigging with this setup more!

2nd Gig Report: Same setup, same P-bass. This time, the room was part of a convention center at a local university for a wedding gig, I would say somewhere around 160-180 guests. FOH support, but no subs (1500 watt EV powered tops) which is unusual for us so I was slightly concerned. We were setup on the carpeted floor, no platform.

Even with the different room and PA situation, this amp + cabinet arrangement worked very well. I left the volume at noon on the Rumble head for the whole gig and had volume and low end to spare. Elevating the Orange cabinet in this fashion still seems to be my best bet to make the highs clearer, but keep it out of the surrounding mics. I have another wedding this Saturday and will try this setup out with my DiMarzio Model J equipped Jazz bass for kicks!

Very long term update: I decided to buy the OnStage WS8540 T stand and give it a try this gig season. I’ve also swapped the much praised Eminence Kappalite 3015 into the Orange and initial testing proves favorable for both stand and speaker, not to mention dropping about nine pounds of weight.

Tip for those who only intend to use these stands on their lowest setting: remove the telescoping legs. The stand weighs a lot less now and the legs don’t jingle around like before. It’s the perfect height for a cab of these dimensions and the lows are still there but clearer.
