Source Audio Zio Bass Preamp

I have the Zio and love it,but I have a question regarding the DI. If I use the Zio, I shouldn’t need a DI-box correct? What type of transformer is used in the Zio and how would it stack up against a JDI (radial)? Apologies in advance if this is a silly question.
I think the tone shaping options would more than make up for any differences between JDI and ZIO (when flat).

Correct. You can record with the Zio as the DI. It has a balanced XLR output and you can adjust the output level up to line level with the volume control as needed, or pad it down if needed. If you are going directly into a microphone input you may want to engage a pad on the mic pre as well, depending on the preamp (some have a high minimum gain). For a line level input you should be fine.

To answer the transformer question, the Bass Zio does not use a transformer for the output. It's electrically-balanced using high quality Burr Brown audio op amps that are designed with use as a DI output as one of the applications. However if you do want some transformer-like flavor, the Grit circuit is based on transformer non-linear behavior.

Thanks man!

Recently been using a far stripped down version of my board and the ZIO has helped me to do that massively. It's good sometimes to not carry a heavy case of pedals around :roflmao:

Combination of my EQ2 with a 59 Bassman style curve into the Zio is quite a heavenly sound!

Is anyone using it with the grit set to medium-high gain?

I've been experimenting with all sorts of settings and I think medium to high grit is musical in some settings. Mostly though, I like it close to factory setting which IIRC is about 50%. However, with some delay (I'm using an EQD Disaster Transport) it sounds great with the grit cranked way up.

I'm okay adjusting with the screw driver, but I agree with several posters here that a knob would've been preferable. Even if it was a tiny side knob. Minor quibble. Really digging the Zio so far and after some more noodling, I'll probably settle on two flavors — noonish almost always and cranked occasionally.

I’ve been using the scoop mode lately, adjusting the bass mids knob so the mids-cut is not drastic. I quite like it this way and my comp is adding some extra presence to notes.

Question:
If you use the scoop mode, what dirt pedal(s) are you guys using?
