Starting to find repeats here on TB

Doesn't bother me, I spend 95% of my time on TB classifieds. 5% only reading what might be interesting in any other forum here.

The new people may need guidence but it is tiring rehashing the same old chicken sanwiches.

Since the search function sometimes is not that strong, like you, I'll do a search and put up a helpful link.

@Stumbo, this is the way to be, my friend... I've even gone so far as to look outside the forum, reposting, offering what I can to help someone understand a concept...

... it's one of the ways I achieve my productivity goals at work... believe you me, I'm going to try harder... the recognition pins the company passes on to their employees for reaching their goals are worth their weight in tin, in Eastern Mongolia...

A thread search denies the opportunity for discussion, which is often what people are looking for in a discussion community. I can easily search for the answers to many of the things I discuss with others. But the point of a discussion forum is often to share opinions and experiences, and I think newer posters also have the right to *discuss* things and not just read about them.

This this this!!! A fresh perspective on an old topic can be very welcome.

In addition, people’s perspectives, tastes, and opinions always evolve. I used to be really against the idea of getting a fuzz pedal. Now I have three, and I’m looking for more!

In 12 years I have been a TBer, it all becomes a blur after the first 6 or so. I remember we used to tell newbies to do a search or check for frequently asked questions, now that rarely happens, because it has grown so exponentially that, most of us that have been here so long have seen the same questions, but maybe phrased differently or these people are responding to things that were posted in 2006 ha ha ha. Either way it is still nice to be able to answer or gain knowledge about bass related information. imho RTS

On the plus side, a fresh crop of bassists seem to be joining us here on the best bass guitar forum on the planet. The down side is that all the same arguments, questions and thought starters are coming back up. Why Fender? P or J? Pick or Fingers? Maple or Rosewood? Ampeg or Boutique?
Just a comment more than anything else. Everything old is new again (except me!)

This very observation is a repeat. Meta.

What's old for the old member (s) is brand new to the one (s)

All of this has happened before and will happen again.

If anyone does think the new members need to be doing lots of thread searches and so forth rather than starting their own discussions, I can promise that it just ain't gonna go that way

Agree. There was a little of that cropping up in the past with a few people. But they were pretty quickly “corrected” on that misconception by a lot of other members to the point of where the somewhat snarky “there’s a search button here” and ****** comments have largely disappeared.

SOP is for most of us to just answer the question even if we have done so a dozen or more times already. On a positive note, some of us have done it enough times that we can just repost a variant of one of our regular responses to something with very little effort. And since it takes no more effort to simply answer a question for the 50th time than it does to come up with a snappy comeback, most of us just smile, think “here it goes again,” and reply one more time.

The only thing that will annoy most old timers here is a new member who asks a question and then argues (often not very politely) with every response they're given. Or the occasional ones who have a total meltdown when they’re informed some of the ways they’re behaving isn’t the way things work here. These are the ones that will tell you what you can do with yourself if you’re not a moderator, or respond with the classic “Then ban me!” comeback. I ran into one of those myself just recently.

Thing is, it’s a community. Which means there’s a cerain vibe and an unwritten set of rules along with the official terms of service just like there are in every community, real or virtual. Some people quickly fit in with a place while others sometimes have trouble adapting. That’s just the way it goes. I’m fairly good at online discussions. I acquired the online social skills that were once referred to as “nettiquet” fairly early. And I’ve participated in (as well as hosted) dial-up BBS message boards years before the advent of the public Internet and modern forum software. So it’s now become natural for me.

I just have to remind myself whenever I’m feeling snarky about something that not everyone has been around or doing this as long as I have.

Most times I succeed. ;)

This guy was banned fairly quickly too.

Often, these types are looking for affirmation of their beliefs or behavior. That's not gonna happen here and they are surprised when not everyone agrees with them. Most of those people fade away pretty quickly.
