String recommendations?

A 45-105 set is going to be the easiest to lay your hands on. Stainless tends to be a little brighter than nickel, so go with what you think your preference will be. YouTube is tough to use as a means of auditioning before you buy. People try, but it just doesn’t translate that well. Don’t fool with tape wounds or the like for now. Flats may be something you might want at some point, but probably not now. Getting a set of stings that don’t necessarily agree with you isn’t a death sentence. It just gives you the opportunity to try something new next time around.

OP: by the range of answers, I think it's fair to say that most of us had to experiment quite a bit in terms of finding which strings (brand, type, gauge, etc.) worked for us, and it's probably also fair to say that as your playing develops, you'll also want to experiment with adjusting the relief, action, and so on before you get to a point where you feel satisfied with everything. You might end up having to sink a little money in terms of experimenting with strings before you find the "right" set(s) but you'll get there at some point. You may well end up finding a few different types of strings that you like and change things up from time to time. Just be patient and keep an open mind.
