String through body hurts?

All strings wrap a bit around a tuning post, right? It’s kinda weird to think that they wouldn’t bend a bit for string-through-body installation.

When it comes to flats, I always make sure they're the correct length for my bass so only the silked part (ie thinner and more flexible) would wrap around the tuning post, not the main body. I realize some flats are pliable enough not to break when wrapped around the tuning post but the best option is not to risk it.

La Bella Deep Talkin' Flats are the only ones that come with explicit instructions against thru-body installation.

That said, I personally have always shied away from putting any flats thru-body based on the idea that tightly-wound flat ribbon wires are not nearly as pliable and bendable as round wrap wires.

I have some LaBella deep talkin bass flats on my mustang. They actually make a set specifically for the string through body of the mustang. They’re a little longer than short scale strings to compensate for the string through body.

Looks like this Yamaha design would require longer-than-normal string winding length... Does it?
I don't know ... I only own the older Yamaha basses that don't have string thru. That angled string thru (along with a pair of angled neck screws in addition to the normal neck screws) is something that came along on the more recent ones like BB424, BB1024, BB2024 and their 5 string counterparts.

I think my crude drawing is suspect ... looking at pictures of the actual bass, the bridge is very close to the end of the body and they bevel the back in the area of the ferules which are also recessed. I don't think it's any further distance than a 90 degree string thru.

I just wanted to use the string through coupled with the fact that it's the only set I have on hand. There are rounds on it now that are so dead that there are tombstones on the saddles! That does it I'm top loading the flat and the P-bass will be deep talk in in a couple hours.

Well that didn't work. Good thing I checked the length. Too long. The set I have are really rough even on the ball end. Looks sort of unwound. The silks are not the same length. The E string flat wrap winds around the post.

Looks like I'm off to the store for a set of rounds. Got any recommendations for an American Standard P-Bass?

Tons. I use DR Low Riders. My son uses GHS bass boomers. I’ve also used Di Adarios, Rotosound Swing bass, even a set of Hartkes a few years ago. Frankly, to ask me to articulate the difference between them would be a tall order. There maybe a tactile difference between them, but when playing in a band setting, I don’t notice much of a difference in sound between them, if any at all. You do need to be mindful of the gage because that will make a huge difference, probably more profound than the brand of string. JMO.

I am of the school that string through body doesn't make a difference anyway, so if there is the potential that it could harm your strings why risk it?

If you think that strings through the body does make a difference and it's worth the risk, then at least try this first:

1) record your bass string through body.
2) record your bass non string through body.
3) now mix them up and play them back. Can you tell the difference? If not, it doesn't matter so just string it through the bridge.
