Suggestion For Used or New Compressor $150 Max

Thanks for the link Plutonium244. I just sent a post in the TB classifieds for a Seymour Duncan Studio Bass, the poster said in his post CONUS only but I asked if he was willing to ship to Canada. I haven't heard back but if he says no I'll respond to your link, the Keeley has CONUS in the item description as well I guess it's a pain to ship to other countries as I find most things I'm looking at on the site say CONUS in the description.

A lot of people will ship to Canada if you ask, but shipping costs are higher so you should expect to kick in $$ to cover the shipping difference. You currently have 0 trading feedback, so that is going to limit their willingness to do something special. I know, it's a Catch 22. But, in lower priced items, sellers are usually more willing to take a risk. But they're also less willing to do special arrangements on lower priced items that move quickly. I know, I've talked in circles and argued for and against my original statement. So I guess I'll just say that it doesn't hurt to ask if they'll ship to Canada and it helps if you offer to cover the difference in shipping within the US.

With the choices you mentioned, spectra comp all the way! You can dial in whatever compressor you want with the toneprint. A few pros here in Nashville sold off their $500 compressors and use it exclusively. I have also gotten a LOT of mileage from my BBE OptoStomp which you can score for $50 on ebay. Wonderful little unit that I use for sustain and light compression.

You should check out EBS Multicomp, it's not on your list. Plus, you're in Hawkesbury, you should take a drive to Rosemère (near Laval) and go see Mark at Musique Max, he's selling them for half of the regular price (130$ can)

It's not a huge drive from your place. My girlfriend works at the Hawkesbury hospital and lives on the other side of the bridge. We're not living together and I drive, It ain't that bad especially at this time of the year.

there is a Seymour Duncan Studio Bass in the classifieds right now ... under budget ... !!

you do need to experiment with it and twist some knobs and flick some switches to find it's sweet spots for your playing/gear ...

of coarse , i found those sweet spots right after i sold it ... !! to get my DG

Hi,
I'm shopping for a bass compressor to add clean sustain to my notes and level out the volume between the low end and high end. Unfortunately I live in Canada and prices are quite a bit higher than in the USA. For example a Markbass Compressore goes for $299.99 new The Seymour Duncan Studio Bass goes for $249.99 and the MXR M87 goes for $266.99 add tax to that and I am at or over $300 and at this moment I only have $150 to spend.

I play a SWR Workingman's 4004 Head through a Traynor B410 Cabinet. I have one passive bass and one active bass a Fender Precision Deluxe Special. I play mostly with my fingers and rarely slap of play aggressive.

So my question is with only $150 to spend should I go new or used. If I go used I would prefer a stompbox but if a rack mount one is better I will go that route if that is the general concensus.

Here is what is available to me new in my Price Range.

Boss LMB-3 $109
TC Electric Spectra Comp $129
Electro Harmix Steel Leather $73
Electro Harmix Bass Preacher $100
Digitech Main Squeez Bass Compressor $89.

Here is what is available used at the moment.

Alesis 3630 $50
Art Dual Levelar Tube Compressor $140
Beta Aivin $60
Beringer T1952 Tube Compressor $150
Boss LMB-3 $75
DBX 160X $150
DBX 163A $80
DBX 166A $150
DBX 166XL $140
DBX 263X $125
DBX 266 XS $125
DOD FX80B $90
Electro Harmix Soul Preacher $85
Electro Harmix Bass Preacher $100
Maxon CP 101 $120
Marshall ED-1 $50
MXR Dyna Comp $115
MXR M-132 Super Comp $80
Rolls GLC 151 Audio Compressor $60
TC Electronic Hyper Gravity $100
T Rex Comp Nova $120
T Rex Squeezer Tube Compressor $150

There are all my choices. Last night I was on OVNILABS compressor site for 5 hrs straight last night and I found it informative, but at the end of the day will I be better served by something new or something used given my $150 limit.

Steve

For that price range, you'll be able to get a brand new Broughton Audio Monocle compressor. It sounds fantastic, as good if not better than comps twice the price, plus it is tiny and super easy to use. On top of it all, you get to support a Canadian builder!

In your price range, it is the *only* thing I'd consider. I wouldn't go with a single thing off the list you posted - no offense intended, just you can get such a better comp for the money.

EDIT: Since you may be asking yourself "what is this Broughton Audio anyway and how can I buy from them", I thought I'd direct you to this thread:

You have "Digitech Main Squeez Bass Compressor $89" under your new list. If you mean the Digitech Bass Squeeze compressor, they are no longer made by Digitech. And if you meant the Bass Squeeze, reread and pay attention to the first sentence of the Ovnilabs review again. Really, the first two word sentence tells you all you need to know.

Zoom B3 and MS0B have very usable compressor and limiter models, might just do the trick for you or point a direction to proceed plus all the other goodies nice to have in your tool bag.
You have a big second from me on the Zoom stuff. I owned an MXR M87 and I like the compressor models more on my B3. With either the MS-60b or B3 you have the added benefit of a boatload of other effects.

You will find yourself adding amp/preamp models in with them because they sound so friggin' good too!

I use a boss Cs-2. They are discontinued but you can still find them on eBay and similar sites.

I would love to hear what Bongmania's opinion is on this.
You have done your homework for sure. All I can add is my own preferences which are highly rated by Bongo - the Markbass Compressore and the MXR Bass Compressor. Both are excellent but are closer to $200. Note that GC and MF likely will have 4th of July sales offering 15% off which would just about close the gap for you.[/QUOT

Thanks for the reply, On paper the Markbass is the compressor I would most want to have. Someone pm'ed me with a link to the Markbass compressor at Guitar Center for $206 Canadian and then a red box appears and says they currently don't ship to Canada, though I'm sure they would at regular price. I also would love to here from Bongomania. I was hoping he would chime in with his oinion.

Cheers.

Merci Rogatien022. Yeah that is a steal of a deal. I live 45-50 min from the Carrefour Laval. Wow I just might take a drive this Saturday. Thanks for the tip.

Thanks blindrabbitI will definitely check out your link to Broughton Audio. I always like to support Canadian. I wondered about the Solidgoldfx comp which is built in Montreal but it is a little out of my price range unfortunately.
