Suggestions for a mini (1590a) envelope filter

FWIW a 1590a pedal is actually 125B/1590b with top jacks sized by the time you factor in the cables, even if you use EBS flat patch cables. 3Leaf still has insanely priced b-stock Proton v3s on Reverb:

3Leaf Audio Proton Envelope Filter - NEW B-STOCK

That will blow the socks off anything else in that price range and that size.

Oh Jesus should I buy a Proton? I was deeply disappointed by the Wonderlove so I hesitate....but...

Damn dude - that's saying a lot. I am going to order an MXR pronto. I respect your opinions on filters more than anyone.
Appreciate you saying that @Mosfed (especially coming from someone with as much experience with pedals as you do). Didn't you get a Fwonk Beta recently? Did that not work out? That's one filter I've not tried yet. Yeah I really like the MXR, took me a while to warm to it as it's got a more unique voice to it. No down sweep, but the ability to blend in clean bass and effect seperately and very responsive sensitivity works really well. It's a more modern sounding filter and its bandpass only so just dont expect it to sound like a Mu-Tron :)

++ for the MXR M82. Tried a few different envelope filters last night in a GAS moment of weakness. Pair up with a EHX Micro POG and DANG! could I dial in some really killer funk tones. Wound up buying both pedals. Now, there's definitely a little learning curve (and I'm just starting on it), but I was able to grab sounds I wanted pretty quickly (and likely by accidental dialing up the "right" combination of settings). And I think the M82 would be a little limited on its own. But with some other pedal (overdrive/fuzz/distortion, or an octaver) it's pretty awesome.

Reviving this zombie thread because I'm starting to think about a 1590A board.
Something like a mooer firefly case that I can throw in my rucksack.

Generally there seems to be a severe lack of good envelopes in 1590A.
I see some respect for the Malekko E.Filter, but they're not easy to find.
The MythFx Infinium is even rarer.

I picked up the Mooer Sweeper and it's good fun, but it sounds a bit cheesy.
I don't see how people find the original bassballs usable without external tuning knobs.

Something about the Mooer Envelope seems cheap and tacky although it's completely affordable.
Hotone offer something even smaller but somehow even less welcoming.

Likewise the Xvive. I listened to a couple of demos on guitar and bass.
It seems more like a typical envelope filter compared to the sweeper, but still lacking in depth.
Maybe I'll get one anyway unless someone warns me off. They're pretty cheap.

As far as I can tell you have to move a size up to the proton or BEF
(unless you find a malekko or mythfx).

I've looked at the 1590A boards thread.
Several people have the sweeper and there's one shot of the malekko.

I haven't worked through the whole 1590A megathread, but I've been through most of the shorter ones.

There was one favourable comment about the Joyo wow-wah so I might try that one.

It's all rather discouraging.
I was hoping for a proper professional 1590A envelope filter instead of these kid's toys.

It's true that the M82 has been giving me GAS for a while now,
but I already have a wonderlove and an EP2 so I've been fighting it.

A 1590A would be a lot smaller and good for portable use,
but I'm having trouble justifying the more standard-sized BEF.
It would just be indulgent.

Unless of course there just isn't a good 1590A envelope filter to be had.
Then the MXR size becomes the best available alternative.

Yeah, that's the ticket.

More research has mostly revealed that :
- Most 1590A envelope filters are crap.
- The Melekko E.Filter sounds good when it works, but has trigger issues.
- The Joyo JF-322 Wow Wah seems to be a reasonable Snow White clone.

So I ordered a Joyo, assuming it's the only likely candidate.
It's ... em ... well ... it's an envelope filter and it sounds ... em ... pretty good ... mostly.

Although it's based on a well respected filter (but which I haven't used myself), it isn't quite what I was hoping for.
It seems like a usable guitar envelope filter and I doubt that you'll find better for its size or price.
I certainly rank it way above the Mooer Sweeper.

It's a bit tweaky and it took a while to find the sweet spot.
I have Sensitivity, Bias and Res at about 3:00 with Decay at 8:00.
I managed to get a reasonable quack with a guitar, but it's a bit anemic on bass.
I guess that makes sense as this is presumably modeled on the guitar version rather than the bass.

In the clean path at least, it seems to pass a bass signal at least as far down as low-B.

The problem to my ears is that very little filtering seems to take place in the lower registers.
It's not as tinny and toy-ish as the Sweeper, but it seems considerably short of the
full-spectum weight I get from the Wonderlove and EP2. It also seems to lose some of the highs.

So far it looks like the best readily available micro-filter, but it's not great on bass so if I wasn't specifically looking for tiny, I'd sell it and move on.

I think it has potential though. I might look into whether the filters can be deepened by installing bigger caps.
I'd also like to separate the envelope and filter inputs, but there probably isn't room for another connector.
