Tech 21 GED 2112 Sansamp Demo + Thoughts

Well that is interesting because I follow his amp/DI usage pretty closely and I remember that Avalon, RPM and that impossible to find Palmer Speaker Simulator (the original not reissue) to be in his rack up until the last tour...plus he was using the Orange behind the stage somewhere. I love Tech 21 stuff and spread the word often but the only thing i think was missed on the Ged-2112 was a switch on the back that combines the two channels for single amp/cabinet usage. I know you can change the jumper or use the effects loop to get around it, but if there was a switch to do this then people could still use the effects loop for effects and the unit would still work for the Geddy Lee purists (and Geddy himself) with two channels and for the average guy that has one amp and cab and needs the channels combined. I guess that is a reason Tech 21 came out with the pedal of this model.

Dunno why they put it in the manual then. Maybe the advice they gave was early on, or maybe they just were responding conservatively based on their perceived technical aptitude of whom they were communicating with. I’ve had them tell me to do far more risky things first if I felt up to the task.
Those 2 pictures of the jumper mod look the same, only difference I see is one pic is circled. Please advise my dumb ass where to move the circled jumper to

In the pic, the top pin closest to the word "tie" is exposed. The middle and bottom pins are covered by the jumper. In this setting, the channels are separate. In order to "tie" the channels together and sum their output, move the jumper up by one pin so that it covers the top pin and middle pin and leaves the bottom pin exposed. (Note that I am using the terms top and bottom relative to the orientation of the picture)

I am moving towards a totally IEM setup with my band, and looking at the GED-2112 to provide a tone shaping/overdrive/DI addition for my rack of wireless gear. Anybody know if the GED-2112 includes IR/speak simulation? Being new to IEM setups, I'm finding both slapping and overdrive/distortion to be really unpleasant going directly to my in-ears without a speaker...

I was just about to tell you that the GED-2112 does NOT have speaker simulation. However, I went to my user's manual just to check and I found this statement:

"The output sections of the SansAmp GED-2112 are designed to be compatible with any application. The outputs can be used for full range (P.A. systems, multi-track recorders, powered studio monitors) or limited range systems (amplifiers utilizing limited range guitar or speaker cabinets), as well as simultaneously. For recording the SansAmp outputs are like having a built-in direct box. Designed without a transformer, they provide a balanced, low-impedance output of extremely high quality for recording or interfacing with professional-quality signal processors. You can go direct to the board and get the same sound you hear coming out of the speakers right onto tape or disc. The SansAmp circuitry not only captures the warm, rich, natural harmonics and sweet overdrive characteristics inerent to tube amplifiers, its speaker emulation encompasses all aspects of multiply-miked tube amp rigs. For live gigs, you can use these outputs direct into the P.A. system and you won't need a microphone in front of your amp."

So...maybe... I mean, there is no specific controls on the unit for speaker emulation. There are 6 outputs: 1/4" and XLR outputs for both the "Deep" and "Drive" preamp sections, a 1/4" "unaffected" output (I think it's at instrument level - it mentions for feeding into another pre-amp or amp), and 1/4" tuner output (unaffected by the Mute switch).

Thanks, John. I know some of the other Tech 21 products, like the VT Bass Deluxe, do have speaker emulation, and I saw that same thing in the manual, but wasn't totally sure how to interpret it. And of course, Geddy himself is using IEMs and no amp, so it would not be unreasonable for speaker emulation to be part of the circuit.

Anybody else using the GED-2112 with IEMs?

GED 2112
I was looking forward to this product from SansAmp but was very disappointed with the tone. I have the Progammable Bass Driver DI and swapped it for the GED 2112. The GED had some cool features such as the "Driver" and "Deep" sections. You can run two individual lines to FOH or to any recording input. As for me, I use solely for live performance and depend on onstage amplification and cabinets.

The GED has two lines for each pre so if using like myself you would need two amps, one amp for "Driver" one for "Deep". What I did was run both through a "ABY" box with "Y" going to the "return effects" on amp, allowing both to be used. Unfortunately I noticed right away that my Ric lost its sound, it sounded like every average bass. I thought maybe using a power amp without an onboard eq would allow the GED to shine, it did not. I returned back to my original Bass Driver DI, Amp and there was Tone again!!!

I'm sure for board and direct use this unit would awesome, for me the eq on it was lacking and I had to crank the treble to get any brightness. It has a very "mid swoop" which is not for me.

Funny, but when I bought the Bass Driver DI the mate said "you'll never play without this DI again", he was right. As soon as I hooked the Bass Driver DI up...it was like "make up sex" with the wife!
If you have use an Y cable you have a phase problem that will just make your tone really bad. Better to put the deep In the effect loop of thr drive and use the 50/50 switch
