Tech 21 GED 2112 vs. Darkglass Alpha-Omega Ultra.

Hey all, thanks for your thoughts and suggestions on this!

I have decided that even though I could get a killer tone from the GED 2112, the fact that there is no way to bypass the unit while I'm using another unit (short of an effects loop pedal) is a deal breaker.

I got curious about this so I checked it out... So just fyi, There's a jumper on the inside of the GED that allows you to change the dual function mute switch to bypass. Its explained further in the GED2112 thread.

The button, without any modification, is a mute. And yes, regarding the whole dual outputs only: you can jury rig the Deep into the effects section and to eliminate some of the phasing you can set the effects section to 50/50%, which is what I do because I don't have two (good) amps with me at the moment. I'm sorry because I couldn't tell you how it was comparing just one amp to a true bi-amp because the headroom on my combo is so low that it's just too hard to tell. It does just sound amazing, and that's with dead-ish strings on a fretless. But yeah, the thing is tailored to Geddy and some quality of life things aren't there and I still find it really good.

Ultimately, though, find out what works best for you... for me, right now, I need a real bass head...

I heard that. My plan is to still use my Mesa Boogie Subway D800+. I'll just be hitting these before the input. I like the HPF and the "Voicing". I'll just use the EQ for adjusting to the various rooms I play in.

It is sounding like this button can act as a bypass. So this may be doable for me. I would love to cop his tone from the Time Machine tour.

Yes that button on the GED-2112 is, out of the box, a mute switch. I've seen on other threads that switching the internal jumper to combine the two preamp sections (rather than in parallel with separate outputs - which is how it comes out of the box) also changes that button's function to a bypass.

There is a -20db switch for active basses, but it is on the back panel. I believe this switch only affects the two inputs that are also located on the back panel, and not the input on the front (which, if plugged in, disconnects the inputs on the back panel).

Can't comment on the Darkglass unit, but I do love my GED-2112...

John

Your thoughts on the Tech 21 GED 2112 vs. Darkglass Alpha-Omega Ultra.
Aaaaand go...

Alpha Omega Ultra all day long for me.

I found the GED to have an inherent midrange nose that's tough to dial out: it works VERY well with the naturally scooped sound of a Jazz bass, significantly less well with something like a MusicMan.

The AOU is much more versatile, I use for everything from worship bass to "knock a brick building down" dirt tones.

This is just bass > AOU > Pro Tools with a bit of added post compression:

..I am using a tech 21 rackmounted RPM and I like it a lot........instrument into it..and the output of the RPM into the front input of my Ampeg SVT Pro 4..the ampeg has 3 tubes in the preamp section..but the RPM pre signal doesnt interfere with the preamp signal from the ampeg..combines in a really sweet way..........would like to say that I have been trying to get a Mike Pope rackmounted preamp..the MPP model..filled with a lot of high grade electronics and is suppose to be one of the best out there..I have been in contact with Mike Pope and he tells me that he no longer builds those preamps..if anyone knows of one for sale..let me know..the unit came in both a single and two channel version..

Heh, heh... Matt, this is what I thought you would say and thanks for your post. Indeed, I am going to use this with my Euro5 with it's 40P pickups which do have the EMG active scoop to it. And even though I have a GED 2112 now, It doesn't mean an AOU might not be in the future.

Recently splurged and picked up an Alpha Omega Ultra. Took a few days to really tune it in to my liking, but once I got it where I wanted it, that pedal is amazing. Easily the best purchase I have made in years. I've now had the chance to play the A:OU direct to FOH twice and through my GK rig. Both sounded incredible. I expected great dirt tones and was not disappointed, but what has amazed me is how incredible it sounds clean into the PA.

I also found out that if you want the Drive and Deep sections (of the GED) to come out of the unit together, you have to jump the Deep output into the effects return of the Drive section (set to 50/50). That's kinda funky. :meh: Also, Tech 21 discontinued the RPM so if you want that, you have to find it in the Drive section of the GED.
They "discontinued" the RPM it is true and not. Because the Ged 2112 is the RPM with a second channel (deep Channel)
Because Geddy Lee start with a Guitar amp/nass cab and bass cab/amp and finally go with a DI for the Low and a SansAmp RPM for a high frequencies drive.
So they stop the RPM to make the Ged which is a more complete one due to the Deep channek
