Tell me about Jazz

You are right....it doesn't !! How he came to his conclusions does not matter. What matters is that we accept his opinion...regardless of the route taken to arrive at them. ;)
Well, this being a discussion forum, it just leaves no room for, well, discussion. I do accept his opinion, it would just be nice to have some context on how it was reached. It amounts to "I don't like that," which is totally fine, but I'm simply curious what the poster finds to be 'descript' and 'offensive' music. For example, I love the Butthole Surfers up to Hairway to Steven, and I'm fairly certain they're considered offensive. Albert Ayler and Ornette, depending on the recording, can reliably clear rooms pretty quickly, but apparently they're still boring and inoffensive. So I'm very curious what this person is into, I might like it.

I accept your point. Perhaps the OP will let us in on how he came to his conclusions....though I doubt it. He seems to be set in his "opinions", never to be converted.

I like some jazz, not all jazz. Some jazz is for the player not the listener, I would rather play some jazz than listen to it...if that makes sense. When I heard Ella in H.S. it changed my life---I was on a journey, listening to standards and classic jazz. I thought that was all there was. Fast forward 5 years and somebody bought me CTI Hollywood Bowl live on vinyl---This was not the standards and classics! It opened up a whole different perspective on jazz. I dug deeper and deeper and even deeper AND wound up back at punk. Moral of the story; Man who rides bicycle, with basket of kittens, pedals lot of pussy.

I don't mind jazz, but it rarely calls to me. It calls a little more than it used to, though.

Like a lot of music outside metal, I enjoy it more live than just playing over the speaker at home. Depends on the mood, though.
 
Typically called fusion, “soul jazz”, “acid jazz” or “smooth jazz” depending on how smooth, rocking or spaced out it gets :smug: Go enter those terms into the search of your favorite streaming platform and see what pops up. To many people it’s not jazz, to others (like me) if I like it I could care less about whether it’s jazz or not.

Those genres descended more or less from the popular organ combos of the 1960s which focused heavily on blues heads and covers of soul tunes mixed with some standards. There was also commercial pressure from record labels in the 60s that led to weird stuff like Ella Fitzgerald covering Cream.




Or even this version. Rock? Jazz? Pop? Prog? Who cares, right?

have you, in fact, listened to the full range of "jazz" from, 1916 to 2024, or are you just spouting off uninformed dreck so you can seem like a big shot?

I suspect a lot more opinionated ignorance and a lot less informed opinion here.

The guy has given his opinion. Accept it for what it is, be it an informed or uninformed opinion. Can we now please move on without dragging the thread into a personal tit for tat battle. 🙏

A music's complexity..( or lack of it).. does not deem it "better," "superior", or more appealing than any other music. All that matters is whether it appeals to a person or not. Perhaps the OP does indeed like music with those "boring" bass lines. So be it. No harm done to anyone.

So all opinions are equally valid? The guy who once heard a Kenny G record's opinion on "jazz" is equally valid to the guy's opinion that's spent 50 years listening and studying the history of the music from 1917 to the present?

As a point of accuracy, the OP of the thread wanted to know more about Jazz, the poster under discussion is not the OP and just dropped in to say it was boring and inoffensive, an opinion he or she is perfectly entitled to, as agreed already.
