Double Bass Tempera Hybrid Strings

I really really like these strings, so do others that play and hear them, several compliments this week on how the bass sounds. A few bassist have played my bass and were instantly digging the temperas.. but! I really lucked out finding a barley used set for a good price. A friend hopped online and went to order but new they are like $600 with shipping. I am worried what will I do when mine are ready to be replaced… hopefully not for a while! Wish they could be stocked by US retailer like what happened with Gollihur and Aquila. Ahem.. GOLLIHUR
I will say the down side as others have pointed out: the set up needs tweaked. Have a rattle, maybe open seam, but could be coming from the sound post.. my guess is the less pressure on the top.. anyways, I live a ways from a good luthier. Trying to decide if I switch back to some new evahs might be cheaper than a long drive and $$ luthier. But the temperas sound so good!! And there’s no guarantees, could just be an open seam r that would rattle with spiros or temperas… but it did start after putting the temperas on. Doesn’t amplify thankfully!
I prefer my strings to be made with rice rather than barley. :woot:

I just put my set of Temps on my American Standard (I swore I would never take them off my little Contrabassetto ) but man do they ROAR on the AS. PLUS the way they are made (No silks but some much more robust wrapping, meant that there was no degradation changing them out (my spiro silks end up all frayed and showing the wire underneath pretty quick) I just love these strings. Yes I wish I could buy them from G here in the states...But after 2 years on the little bass they sound and feel like new.

I will occasionally come across a recording I did years ago when I was still using a stiffer string like Superflexibles. I generally like the tone but recall how I would be playing quite a bit more forcefully using more energy to get the bass to sound the way I wanted. As I got older and hopefully smarter I wanted to change my approach and the Hybrids turned out to be exactly what I wanted and needed. It took some thought and adjustment of touch but it seems to have worked. I like the sound and I feel much more confident about my long-term health as a bassist. I hope the strings last for seven years as I've seen mentioned here but even if they didn't I would still pop for a new set when needed.

The way the Helix thread through the tailpiece caused my tailpiece to rattle a bit. the aircraft cable tailgut was doing it. I put a zip tie around it right at the tailpiece holes where it threaded through.
The angle of the tailpiece was different with the Tempera/Sonores string mounting method vs the more common way strings pass through the tailpiece.

I recorded some music with my friends- for you to hear the sound of tempera hybrid on my (rather simple) bass. It is recorded by microphone, no pu involved.

Hope this helps. I plan on making another record with tempera basso on another bass.

Nice woody tone, slightly growly too. doesn't look like you're pulling too hard.
does anyone with these strings have experience with Velvets to compare to?

Has anyone done the on - off - on thing with the tempera hybrids? I want to try some strings that I’ve never tried before, but since the temperas are so dern expensive, I don’t want to jeopardize their integrity.

Other synth core strings I’ve tried did NOT like being on off on again

I have done it with the Bassos, with no apparent harm.

I had some winding issues with removing them
Curious, what do you mean by winding issues?

FWIW, I have taken tension off and on multiple times when doing fingerboard work, but not taken them fully out of the pegs. I haven't had any issues.

I've done it with the first edition of the Tempera two times. Although I was very careful I experienced one string completely broken and another with serious damage in the part behind the bridge.

Regarding the price I was very disappointed...

This happened to me as well but I received replacements (I paid for shipping). In my case I think it was due to a more severe than usual peghead angle.

Yeah, the first edition had breakages but they sent replacements for free, of course. The new editions seem to be very durable.

Unfortunately not in my case. After my first tryout I put the strings in a box and put them on again after the guarantee period was over. They gave me a discount on the broken string, but I was still very disappointed. You cannot put a product for a high price on the market with such serious problems.

I've been using my HYBRIDs on a touring bass for more than a year now. They are put on and taken off every week and don't cause the slightest problem. I can't detect any signs of fatigue in terms of sound either. I've been doing this with other strings for 10 years now and have always had to change strings every few months. Since the HYBRIDs, that seems to be a thing of the past.

Perhaps the first-generation temperas were more sensitive, but the new ones seem to be mega stable.

After years of searching, I have finally found a solution for myself. The Tempera Hybrids do exactly what I was looking for. I always had the problem of having to compromise somewhere. Either no good sound with the bow, or no punch when plucked, somehow I had almost given up. But the hybrids can do it all. Super nice, woody sound with the Pizz. Incredibly easy bow response. And can also be amplified really well, because not as muffled as e.g. Evahs....

All true! “No compromise” is probably the best way to describe these
