Thank God for Guitar Center Setups

Rule #3: Off-limit Topics & Forum-Specific Rules Controversial topics will be VERY closely moderated. Politics and religious debate/discussion are not allowed in any forum unless specifically allowed by the forum's posted rules ("sticky" threads).

I don't get this post. Are you claiming a GC-bash is controversial, or that the mention of the word "God" makes it religious?

If you mean door #1, then not only are you being too sensitive, but there are these threads on a daily basis. If you mean #2, then you are being WAY too sensitive.

Shhh, relax and have a seat.

Also, capitalizing "God" does make it religious.
But, do you see the smiley????
It was kind of in jest.

I recently bought my 14 year old son a lovely Squier VM Special Jaguar. The set up, and finish were exquisitely done.
So much so that I can't help playing it every time I'm near it.

On the other hand, this was only one that was like that. I played a lot of their basses that day, and all had poor set ups.
Well, except for the Fender Jazz they had, but my 14 year old isn't getting one of those.....yet...

Back on topic:

Expecting an instrument, hanging on the wall, (touched frequently by the skilled and un-skilled, going thru temperature and humidity changes) to be setup to one, specific individual's liking is ludicrous at best.

But if it diverts the "What the **** is that?" discussion with the missus then all hail bad setups. :-)

I'm not taking issue with the facts of buying a used bass. One of my favorite instruments was a beat to hell MIM P I got off eBay for $180. I'm just saying that because neither bass was set up properly, I didn't have that magic moment that would have inevitably led to an unnecessary purchase.

What are you really trying to say?!? :jawdrop::p I don't think (we're) getting it... :nailbiting:...

The moral of the story is: just buy one of them... stress over explaining to the wife... pay for a set-up (or do yourself)... if you did all this - you wouldn't have even needed to start this thread :hyper:

... all kidding aside - I have had the same experience (numerous times) at my local GC's- has saved me mucho dinero!!

I had the same experience and relieved a little GAS by stopping in and playing a few basses with really crap setups.

I think you may be the only person who read my original post. Or maybe I'm unclear (the latter is certainly likely). I'm glad they were not set up well and had old dingy strings on them. I'm glad I didn't purchase them. It helped me walk out of the store without doing something stupid.

Now if I'm in the market for a P bass soon, will I be cursing myself for not picking one of them up? Absolutely. But I don't see a reason to need one in the near future.
