The Gear Insurance Thread

My gear is insured through Heritage Insurance. They are brokers that special in musica instrument insurance. Their policies insure against all kinds of theft, loss or damage and let u set the value. Unfortunately I know how great they are. A couple of years ago I had a brand-new custom made Alembic Series II fall off a Guitar stand at a gig. The headstock snapped completely off. Rather than insisting on a repair at my request Heritage paid me the full insured value for the bass and let me keep the electronics and hardware to use in a replacement. How cool is that? I can't say enough about how good they are!

First, Thanks to all who have contributed to this thread. Thanks to the "Embellisher" for merging the 2 threads.

This thread has been chocked full of fantastic information. Gotta get some insurance on my horns, basses, and audio equipment.

Bump for one of the best threads on TB.

I got my Insurance (Clarion Ins) after I bought my Smith! I already had the Sadowsky but with that kind of $$$ invested they had to be protected. Since then I've listed all of my gear. :hyper:

What kind do you have T-most ? I have my stuff listed under my renters insurance but I am not sure if that is a good way to go ?

You should call your insurance rep and get the details for your renters insurance.

I have renters ins through Liberty Mutual and they've assured me that all my instruments (not amps, cabs, etc) are fully covered world-wide.

I threw a few hypotheticals at them such as having my instruments stolen from my car, damaged while abroad, fire in my apt, etc and they assured me it would be 100% covered.

Fortunately I haven't had to use the insurance so I haven't been able to test their customer service. I've had my car insured through them for a number of years and for that their CS was very good.

I had all my instruments professionally evaluated and appraised, sent the appraisals in and paid about 10% of the total appraisal value for annual coverage.

Thanks adbass.... never thought about the appraisal thing...hmm, I just estimated how much it would cost to replace' em and put that down... might have to revisit that...

I'm a home owner with insurance. However, I also have Clarion Musical Intrument Insurance (out Of L.I NY) covers musical instruments. My premium is $250 per year and covers up to $20,000 of musical instruments/gear. I have everything on this policy... basses, guitars, amps, recording gear even my pedals. I have about $15,000 of gear on this policy so in the event of theft or fire (home or away) I'm covered. it's definately worth it (if your gear is worth considerably more than the premium).

Is it easy to upgrade your insurance policies?

I do play out in a band, but I never have more than $500k worth of gear on me at any time. The rest all sits at home and is covered by my renter's insurance.

However, if we start making it bigger and I need to bring more gear with me to venues/tours/etc., is it easy to have my policy adjusted to cover $10k?

I have a special rider on my NW insurance with all my gear listed with serial numbers and all that good stuff. I do not know the price, but my wife said it is not that expensive. All I had to do was produce a receipt for anything over 1500 bucks. Past that I have my insurance guy on my outlook and when I add/delete items from my rider, I just shoot him an e-mail.

Been looking into equipment insurance through my local state farm rep, but they seem to be unclear about musical instruments. I'm thinking Music Pro Insurance through ASCAP would be better.

Anybody have any thoughts or other suggestions on equipment insurance?

BTW, my home owners insurance would only cover $1,000 total at home and $250 away from home. That's not even a drop in the bucket.

Musicproinsurance.com is insurance through the Fireman's fund and they will insure EVERYTHING including wardrobe for $10 for every $1000 of insurance. There's a $50 minimum purchase (so $5000 of insurance) Only a $100 deductible. Did I mention that $50 covers you for a full year? They will cut you a check to replace whatever breaks for ANY reason, (and there's no limit on location) including pouring beer on a pedal board, or running over your bass with the truck, or theft, or floods, or fire, etc....and they don't ask many questions/paperwork....Awesome insurance. I've had to use it a few times. They are incredibly fast with the reimbursement to get you back on stage quickly too. When you sign up have you're model and serial numbers along with the replacement value of each individual piece ready, as it saves you a bunch of time.

Never thought I'd be "old enough" to have insurance on my gear, but for a few $ a year, I have no worries about that chick that's dancing with a full beer over my pedalboard or the big guy behind her who's ready to charge me for flirting with his girl....haha...BRING IT!

Ok, I have a question...

Story is... my instruments are covered through my home contents insurance, and I have portable possessions cover so they are covered outside the house as well - if anything happened to them while they were in the car I assume my car insurance would cover that.

I'm already aware that if I was being paid for any gig that my cover would be invalidated... but what if they money that we got for the gig was split between the rest of the band but I didn't take a cut? Technically I'm not getting paid then but the band are. What happens here?
