I am the proud owner of that Skjold 34" bass. I am quite glad the 10 string did not work out for Tom
Anyway, I would like to share my impressions of the bass, as it seems to be unique in the Skjold world. Of course it is beautiful. I have been mesmerized by that finish and the figured top for almost a week now. Each time I see it in a new light it takes on new depth. A friend told me that it looks like the finish is like 1/2" thick because it is so 3 dimesional. The pictures just do not capture that very well.
But, you all know how beautiful the basses are. It is mentioned in practically every one of the 4,000 or more posts in these threads. I am sure the big question is about the B string, at least mine was during the long, sleepless nights as I waited for the bass to arrive. In short, the B is awesome. It sings out very clearly and is not floppy. I got to play a 3 set gig with it just 3 days after it arrived, and I set out on a mission to put the B string to the test. That night I played up to the G, and it sounds just as good as the G on the E string. I played down to C# and it was clear and strong. I should mention that I was playing through a shuttle 6.0/neox 212 combo, which seems like a good match so far.
Overall the bass is quite punchy and well balanced. It is the first bass I have had that I didn't boost the mids when playing with the band. The tone is so clear and punchy that I actually considered backing down a bit, but didn't
I am so glad I found Pete, and I have TB to thank. I was looking specifically for light weight, well balanced basses that have a good B string and his name came up several times. I specifically wanted a 34" bass and he just happened to have this one he had started for Tom. Apparently this is going to lead to a whole new production of 34" scale Skolds.
Thanks Pete! I love it! Good luck with the fishing.
