The Praise and Worship Band Bassists Club

One of my old churches was heavy into tracks and they always played to synth tracks usually and once figured that out, I would just start playing high along with the synth part but more melodic and it worked out. I ended up talking to sound about it and they’d let me know. I started playing one ear out so I could hear it better, then I adjust my volumes to better match the ambient.

I REALLY like the rounded edges on the fingerboard - it is amazing how comfortable it makes the neck. His build quality is nothing short of amazing - the only builder that is on the same level is Ken Lawrence! And, I have had a ton of high end/expensive basses to compare. My DC 5'er is on for this weekend!
He has a refreshed 5'er (P and MM Nordstrand pickups) on his site that is just SO tempting!!!!!

His jack detail is so cool. The magnetted covers too.

What ever wood that is (Redwood?) on the top and head stock of your bass is gorgeous! :)

They are beautiful basses. I just can't wrap my head around all the knobs. The hidden/receased input can be limiting for cables, but it's cool. I love the magnetic cover. Everyone should do that. Battery compartments as well.
I use cables with the Neutrik silent plugs with both right angle and straight ends and don't have a problem with either. The basses are Volume, blend, vintage roll off and treble, mid and bass. I just leave the treble, mid and bass flat and use the blend and roll off to get the tones I want. The other bass is also a J5 body with Nordie P/MM pickups and the same preamp. Camphor burl top - the first one I posted was Cocobolo.

My Dad's father was a master cabinetmaker and taught me woodworking so I am enamored with really nice wood. He spent lots of time with us to teach us well.

My Mom's father would not teach me his trade and I have been bummed about that since I was a kid. I mean, what kid would not want to blow up stuff??!!!!! He was a demo engineer for Texaco and planned/supervised all of the large use of explosives. What a bummer!

Fender Special Edition Deluxe PJ through my Downtown Express to the board. Compressor is only on for clean gain - our board wants all the signal I can send it.

Kept it the split coil soloed the whole set. And it sounded so good. So good. Really cut through in the the mix so well. The only negative comment was I seemed to have a lot of highs - I had the tone open wide so I’ll bring that down on Sunday.

This is the bass I grab whenever I want to play in my home office, which is where I usually play. Honestly I didn’t feel like going upstairs to grab the Sadowsky (tweaked my knee on Wednesday) so I just took the Fender.

And it’s so comfortable to play. I love that neck. And while the action is already nice and low I can still get it lower, I just need to put in the time on the bench (and now I’m even more motivated to do that).

I played that bass at GC and also played the Standard P that I ended up getting. It was a super hard decision. The PJ was about 1 Lb. Heavier than the P. For me, the J pickup wasn't adding anything that made the extra weight feel like a good decision. It was a super hard call, but I went with the P. I'm glad you re enjoying yours. Love that color and the block inlays.

Sorry, I meant I know what all the knobs do, I just don't care for the look of all of them in a line like that.

:laugh::bassist:
Good thing you have the Roscoe then! Those are GREAT basses and I was sad to sell my SKB Custom 5 fretless!
I really have a hard time playing anything else. I just love the sound and feel of them so much. I have tried to broaden my selection but I seem to always come back. It's the neck for me. I've just never played a more comfortable neck.

I picked this up used from Music-Go-Round, so I was in Yes/No territory, not A/B with another bass. Honestly, when I walked in and saw it on the wall I knew I was leaving with it (it's really stunning in person), then picking it up and playing it just confirmed things. It is a bit heavy but it balances really well on a strap, so it's not tiring to play.

If everything else was the same and it was just a straight P pickup I wouldn't miss the Jazz at the bridge, but this neck is truly my happy place when playing.

I'm a bit concerned that my liturgically aligned green shirt will clash with the Sea Foam Pearl finish on Sunday, but then I won't be looking at myself so I don't think I'll mind if it does!

What are you hoping to achieve by changing the pickup and what isn't the pickup you have now giving you that you want? If you don't have something in mind you might end up somewhere tonally that you won't like. For example, if you want vintage but the recommendations point you toward a Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder you're going to be disappointed.

IMO, if you're happy with the sound and are just chasing tone it's not worth it. Just because it's an inexpensive bass doesn't mean the pickup is junk.

This is an excellent question @MochiBass , Thank you. I had to think about it.

What I hear from the current pickups is simply muddiness. It's not nearly as clear as what I hear from other basses in the same setting. It's not bad but I want to explore if I can improve it.

Indeed, the pickup may be fine. I'm curious to compare it with something else. Thus the comments of my band mates "It will be different...but is it better?"

I appreciate all the input I've had here...thanks. I'm processing it all and will keep you posted.

Blessings on your weekends of worship!!

I tried a Roscoe once at Sam Ash a few years ago. Tone for days….

So our little church family (~20 folks) need to leave where we were meeting pretty suddenly. We met tonight in a home - bongos, Tamborine, 2 acoustic guitars and me on my Uke Bass with a very small pig nose amp. Loved it! So easy to hear everyone singing and we gelled as a band better than we have in a long time. God is good!
He knows what He’s doing.

Finished for the day, and packed my stuff to go home. I timed myself from when I got home, unpacked my stuff from the car, and setup everything in my office. That's including storing my cart/dolly in the garage, and putting my empty case in my closet... :)

The second picture, is an older pic... but the setup and cable management is the same. The secret is... all the cables at my house stays at home. I use separate cables when I play at church. When I get home, I just plug all the cable managed cables back in my rack and pedalboard... set up my bass and guitar stand, and put the case away in the closet. What keeps me from setting up faster is... my office is the furthest room from the front door... haha...

Hope everyone had a great weekend... and a good Sunday worship... now... lunch time!!!

One Christmas I played my Minimoog at church, but didn't take it back down to the basement because of how dang heavy it was and how hard it would be to get it back in its assigned space.

So it sat in its ATA road case.

For a year.

And then I decided to sell it...because I obviously wasn't making much use of it.
