This started as discussions out of my Rick-man build thread, It is going to be different enough that it probably deserves it's own build thread, even though I anticipate largely building the two at the same time.

I think that between my EUB that I finished last year, my Spector, and the Rick-man - the only thing missing from my bass arsenal is a good P-Bass. I've never cared particularly for Fenders and their copies. I've always admired single cut designs, but never had the inspiration for my own until a few weeks ago when I decided that somewhere between a violin bass, a mandolin, and a Les Paul body style there existed something that could be really cool.

Here's the plan:
Single cut carved top P-Bass
Top: Bookmatched crotch grain walnut
Back: to be determined, but I am planning a maple fillet under the walnut, the back may be more maple, or mahogany
Neck: this is my first bolt on. Neck will be at least a 5 piece laminate of maple and either mahogany or some other wood. There will be a top laminate of walnut to match the body with a reveal to show the laminated neck. I've ordered some Rosewood to make the fingerboard from. I plan on keeping it pretty simple, but I may decide later to bind the fingerboard.
Tuners: Gotoh, GB-707s
Electronics: I plan on putting a Seymour Duncan Quarter pounder 5 string pickup. I am looking for some 60mm sliders to use as a passive volume and tone circuit that will be tucked into the top side horn. If that doesn't work, I may wind up putting pots there, but completely recessed into the body.
Finish will be clear poly or shellac (I really liked the way it turned out on the EUB)

Did I mention the templates? I've watched a few videos on doing the carved top, and I'll probably need a whole bunch of templates to pull it off!

The drawing is nicely done!

It's interesting to read discussions about single cut basses. Some like them, others don't. Personally the uncut upper horn really turns me off.

But hey, they're not there to please me, but to please those who like 'em.

Thanks! It took a bit to get it to the place where I was content with how everything tied together, and the proportions.

There's definitely a bit of an art to it. My biggest problem is that often that top lobe winds up awkwardly misshapen and throws the aesthetics off. There are definitely some that I look at and wonder what the designer was thinking, and a few that are just jaw droppingly stunning.

I'd like to think that I got this one closer to the second category...

Agreed. Still not my cup of tea, but a more balanced approach than many. I can see the appeal for those whose taste runs that way.

Love the design, in general I’m firmly on the fence with single cut basses but my overall feeling is that it’s no different to a double cut in that it’s possible to design a great one, or a bad one! (Yours is great)

On yours I particularly like the hint of a cutaway on the upper, it’s not a single cut, it’s not a double cut, it’s a one-and-a-bit cut

I'm really digging that design! Can't wait to see it finished

Side note, the thread title made me think of the SCP Foundation. SCP meaning secure, contain, protect in this scenario. The premise is that there is a foundation dedicated to preventing all sorts of dangerous mystical objects and beings from getting out in the world.

SCP Series - SCP Foundation

It makes for some good reading if you're into sci-fi/fantasy/horror stuff.

Some might say a singlecut P bass should be locked away, but if you stick with that design, it's gonna be a beauty!

I'm a fan, both of single cuts and of your design.

My only observation is that the violin style body cutout on the treble side, while attractive, may (or may not) be comfortable for the player when seated. Since it is for your on personal use, only you will know.

Carry on!
