Hello all,

I tried searching for some threads on this topic but came up a little short-handed. I was wondering how many of you guys here have tinnitus and what have you done to help it? Long story short, I am nineteen years old and have tinnitus. Yes I wear earplugs, yes I do not play in stupid loud bands, and did I mention I wear ear plugs?

My tinnitus is very mild and I would love to keep it that way. Any tips from those gigging who also have it?

EDIT: Wow, I was not expecting this thread to get the amount of responses it did. Thank you guys for the advice! It makes me feel better to know I am not alone in this.

EDIT #2: For those of you struggling with tinnitus, there is another website called TinnitusTalk.com with a lot of helpful information, support sections, and a section for success stories. I know some people on there would love to hear from the dudes here that have tinnitus and keep rockin'.

I have suffered with it for many years, what with my job when I was young, loud music ect it was going to happen. Mine like yours is mild and most of the time I don't notice it now unless I can't sleep and the it's quite annoying. My doctor said that no treatment was really available for it, which was at the time a real bummer. Mine has not got any worse as yet over the years and to be honest with you, I have become less aware of it. I know you must be worried and so was I, try and forget about it, keep protecting your ears as much as you can the more you think about it the more you will hear it.

In my experience if it becomes persistent it probably won't go away. Ever. Obviously you are doing the right thing to prevent any future damage. It can get (and stay) pretty bad and loud. I am surprised I have not gone insane from it. Basically there is no such thing as quiet for me. I have never heard of any effective cure. For temporary ringing you can find out what triggers it, blood pressure etc. Other then that you just live with it and prevent further loss. Good on you for caring about this at 19.

I've had it since my first concert at 16 or 17 (ozzy's bark at the moon tour with motley crue supporting their shout at the devil album). It got worse when I was exposed to gunfire while wearing faulty ear protection at age 40. I'm now 47.

Mainly I ignore it. I'll fall asleep wih the tv on but set with a timer to shut off after I fall asleep.

If I didn't ignore it I think it would drive me crazy.

Had it for the last 20 years. It is constant for me, but I tend to not notice it unless I am thinking about it. I always wear ear protection now to prevent it from getting worse. It really can be annoying at times. I cannot stress enough the importance of wearing ear protection. It is preventable, but not reversible!!

I've got it pretty badly. I've tried lots of things. Some work a little but they're way too complicated for me to write out from my phone... Which I'm responding with. If you search tinnitus and my user name you'll find info I posted a while back.

As odd as this sounds too, I've known people who have been able to talk themselves out of tinnitus. I haven't been able to myself, but I've learned to not focus on it, which makes it almost non existent. Regardless of the fact that it's always there, if that makes sense. Like right now, I focused on it and it's there in all its glory. Before this thread I hadn't noticed it all day.

There's info on that on the internet if you search deep enough. Some people also claim cinnamon and raw honey helps. I did that for a couple of months and I actually think it did take a little of the edge off. Check my older posts on this.

Good luck.

This is incredible info to me. First time I've ever heard of it (no pun intended). I am looking forward to trying it out.

Although, as others have said, I usually just ignore it.
I found that pushing in on my ears really hard with my palms kicks that technique into high gear. Pushing hard initially amplifies the squeal, but after doing the tapping it really gives some relief. Doesn't make it disappear but makes a huge difference. I do it a few times in a row.
