Tips on starting a jazz jam?

Not sure I agree. It's all about consensus, if somebody doesn't know the tune, they really shouldn't be playing it. If it's the house section, then you can always wave off the tune and LEARN IT FOR NEXT TIME. But for cripe's sake, call something everybody knows.

Actually, my initial statement isn't accurate. I'm sure I don't agree, no equivocation necessary.
Ok.

Some great ideas here! I definitely like "paying the house band," even if it's a little! You're providing entertainment for a venue, so it's still a gig!
Have fun, and for god's sake, don't play "Chameleon!"

The Jazz jam scene at "Funk and Waffles" is , last I checked, healthy. It happens on Sunday afternoon/evenings, and pulls old and young cats alike.

This is one of the greatest things about jazz, outside the music - it's a genre that brings the generations together. I would advertise your Jam at the local schools/colleges, as well as senior centers.

The local Sam Ash store does something like this. They have a small backing band and then have a "jazz jam session" on certain days. They actually publish a list head of time of the jazz standards the backing band will be playing that day (Autumn Leaves, Fly me to the Moon, etc.). I have not had time to join them but I found the list helpful just to get an idea of what to prepare for. +1 on bringing printouts of the charts

that's primarily a music venue that also sells waffles, some beer, and a little booze.

It would definitely be great if the op had a similar music venue in his town instead of just tv bars that sometimes have bands.
