Torched SX build

A friend did this to a Carvin he sent me, but didn't remove the finish. Here's a link to the thread. Looks great!
NBD Torched Carvin LB70!!! Yes there was fire involved....

I’m surprised that under the opaque paint was a body with relatively consistent and decent looking grain! That’s awesome though- I do like the idea of the scorching. I was just checking out a thread where a dude set the body on fire.

Pretty wild.

A friend of mine gave a burned finish to one of his Ibanez jams. Scroll down to “Ibanez Jem777BBQ” on the below link.
My Guitars

There’s also links to a series of YouTube videos detailing the process. Not for hothead feint of heart . As he says himself, the internet did not approve!

Looks awesome! Here’s my torched Japanese P Bass and a guitar my buddy and I did a while back. The P Bass has been my main player since I got it. I love it.

Yes I was surprised too. It wasn't my original intention on completely stripping all the paint off. Once I saw the grain though...

Waited 3 weeks for the pickguard to get here and it doesn't fit. Go figure. The part that hugs the neck would need to be trimmed a little which is not a huge deal but I notice the part at the bottom where the pots are doesn't cover the entire cavity.... ugh. A little sliver of the cavity is still visible. It looks like the stock SX pickguard has a more rounded edge where the pots are whereas this one has a pointier edge.

Very cool.

I've got a Dean edge body that won't sell. I want to torch it now! I have a torch but does anyone know if similar but more controllable results could be achieved with a high power heat gun.

I don't know if you would want to try this, but making your own pickguard is fairly easy, plus you get to chose from so many different materials and colors and styles ETC. Ebay sells pickguard material cheap. Lots of choices.I can also recommend Greasygroove.com - they sell graphical pickguard material and much more.
Just trace your old one onto the material. You can change anything at this point to fit or what looks good to you.Use a jig saw to cut it out(cut OUTSIDE the lines a little). Then take a file and a razor blade to shape exactly. Don't forget to drill screw holes and there you have it, maybe a few hours at most and you have EXACTLY what you need.

This is a good idea. Also if you are willing to give wood a try, a dark wood pickguard might look great against the lighter roasted wood.

Very cool . . . or should I say hot?? I'd just go with the original black pickguard. What color is the one that didn't fit? You might have to send the original off to someone who does customs.

I just think the black pickguard would be too much with the black hardware and the black pickups. The one I ordered was blue pearl. I was torn between that and an orange pearl. Holding it up to it, I do really like how the blue would have looked.

May be what I end up doing in the end. I have a jig saw and a dremel so probably could do this fairly easily. I think for the time being I will probably paint the SX pickguard for now just to get it playable and then come up with a plan. It's driving me nuts having this thing almost there and not being able to play it lol.

This would be quite awesome. I had this idea as well as I have seen a strat type guitar before (on a YouTube video iirc) with a wood finish and a darker wood pickguard and it looked great just unsure how I would make one. Unfortunately I don't think I have the woodworking knowledge and tools to be able to make one from scratch.

I've made a few pickguards using a regular pickguard sanded thinner, then contact cement a piece of wood veneer(also sanded thinner) to it. Then a coat or two of spray polyurethane and there you go. You can find LOTS of different kinds of wood veneer on ebay fairly cheap. I have a tele walnut veneer pickguard I made that is so cool even if I do say so myself. Cost me about $25 altogether.
