Truss rod damage in shipping possible?

seller who insists all was perfect prior to shipping. He suspects the bass received a blow in shipping which broke the rod

When I was 5 or 6 years old, I was playing with my dads K of C sword and broke it.
I told him I never took it out of its sheath - it just fell on the floor and broke somehow.

I don't remember being allowed to leave the house for the next week or so.

NO SOUP FOR YOU!

So we are sure its a single action and not a dual action. Righty tighty usually applies but not always.
Usually a dual action rod when you get to the center before it starts to go in the other direction it feels loose like it's broken and then if you keep turning it it moves the rod the other direction. From the way the OP described it it certainly sounds like the rod is maxed out.

The facts you lay out suggest the problem existed before shipping. Did the photo on reverb show strings that are too short? Even if the bass was damaged in shipment, I believe it's still on the seller.

I had a similar problem within the last year with a bass I bought from GC used. Bass had a too-good-to-be-true price. I had the bass shipped to me. When it arrived the strings were slack. Tuned to pitch the neck had way too much relief/bow, but actually played. When I turned the truss rod nut, the truss rod would spin with. Seems pretty obvious the damage was known, likely before the bass was even listed.

I drove across town and returned it to my local GC for a full refund. They did not inspect the bass in my presence.

In my experience Reverb usually sides with the buyer, whether it's warranted or not. From what you describe, I think it's warranted. IMHO, Formally request a refund.
Sometimes store/shipper will de-tune to ship. The easy return is why I only buy used basses from GC. I have returned 2 without any issues.

It's been over a week since this all started. IMO it's time to quit trying to solve this between the two of you; it's time to elevate it to Reverb. FYI I have over 1,000 transactions on line, I've had issues with MAYBE a twenty transactions. I've only ever been dissatisfied once. I always elevate the case to a higher authority if I don't receive a response after two days, after the second communication that isn't responding in a favorable manner; or after receiving a favorable response, but no follow up after two days.

EDIT: Keep a complete record of your email activity, you can forward that to Reverb if asked. Don't hesitate to let Reverb know you have that record either.

I actually put an "official" refund request in with Reverb, right away, last weekend. They elevated it to a "Reverb Protection case." With last Monday being a holiday, they should get back to me with a resolution this coming Monday.

Once Reverb has notified you that they have elevated it to a case and are looking into it be patient and let them do their job. And I believe they also have access to any communications you have had with the seller via their messaging system on the site. So they will be able to follow what has happened. They may reach out to you with questions but the vast majority of times they will side with the buyer and you will get your refund. Usually the seller will have to send you a prepaid label to return it just make sure you pack it well.

In fact I would take a video of yourself actually packing it up or pictures of it when it's been wrapped and packed and addressed just in case the seller tries to say there was any additional damage in the return shipment.

Just curious why you avoided just telling us what the bass is?
Kinda wondered that myself.

But when I see snarky responses such as that when talented smart people are being generous with their time in a desire to be helpful, I lose all interest.
