Well I've been intrigued by some of the more out there designs lately.

I threw out a pretty conservative bid on this on eBay, and today I won it.

I won't have it in my possession for a little bit but I was hoping someone could tell me a bit about it.

Obviously it's a mockingbird.

What threw me off is the much simpler control layout and dot inlays. Also there's no stringers from the neck to body.

Serial number is either 86713 or 88713.

Any ideas when/where this was made? And is this a lower end model or did bc Rich do custom control layouts as customer requests?

Looks like it wasn't played much. Pretty pumped to rock it regardless.

A guy in a band I played with for a short bit played the guitar...never knew they made a bass.

Looks way cool! Odd horns, but a helluva an awesome finish! Neck looks comfy as hell. Bet it sounds killer with two split coils.

Just by the look of the craftsmanship, I can only guess it may be an earlier or maybe a "special" model.

Awesome score! The bassist in my buddy's band uses one and it sounds perfect. I'm not sure if it's the same model as yours but it is a vintage one. Again sweet bass! Love the headstock.

Based on a quick search and reading a few articles it seems that if the serial starts with 86 it was made in 82 (probably). Several articles said that "by 1986, serial numbers were four numbers behind". It seems that in the very early 80s serial numbers began with the year of manufacture and then gradually lagged behind. So it's probably 82 or 83. Definitely DiMarzio pickups (factory stock). Can't help you with the controls.

Sucker looks good and I bet it sounds great.

Wow! Blast from the past. I was friends with a guy that had one of those back when. He was putting it through a Traynor YBA tube head and a pair of ported 15s. It had a big floomy deep rich sound that felt like warm chocolate with a little mint on the top. Lovely bass that just oozed quality. It could growl - or purr - on demand. And it was a dream to play. It's definitely different enough looking (in a good way) to draw attention. Congrats on a really nice score! Play it well.

And its a Long Horn Bird (longer lower horn). VERY cool indeed. Care to share price wise what you snagged it approx. for?

EDIT: Looked at SOLD listings. Uhmmmm that was a REALLY good deal. Congrats!!

I am curious as to the price as well

I'm assuming this is it: B C Rich Mahogany Mockingbird 4 String Bass

"Every time I sell a BC Rich, I stare at it for a while, pack it up, drop it off at the FedEx center, get behind the wheel with my eyes welling up and ride off into the sunset hoping that it finds a sweet warm home or a dark dungeon, or whatever your fancy."

That is an amazing quote... I wish it were true for me, I've only had the "pleasure" of owning / selling a poopy Warlock import....
