I've finally seen the light and wish to add an hpf to my chain. My hope is to calm down my compressor on low-B string notes in particular. Never used one-what do you guys like? My chain for bass at present goes tuner, dod env. filter, mxr phaser ( used only occasionally), squeezebox la2a-type compressor, amp input.

If you want to just dip your toes and get something inexpensive that doesn't need power, the Gob Instruments Small Fi bass specific HPF is a decent place to start. I've got one that I keep in my with my amp, just in case. I think the Broughton options are better, but they're also more expensive and need some juice. The Small Fi can just sit on your amp out of the way.

Someone will prattle on and on that this isn’t true. But in my experience I’d get one, I use one, but I would not obsess over getting the right one because it’s not a complicated circuit. I agree the above recommended brands are great.

Also, when you get one, be open to adjusting it to tune your rig to each room you play in.

No 2 rooms/stages the same. I've had it vary from 70 to 120, usually around 80 though with my stuff.

I have the Broughton HPF/LPF. I always feel like it’s overkill. The FDeck 3 is currently running always on, does the job with no drama.
Agreed. I had a Broughton HPF/LPF and sold it to get a Broughton always-on HPF. Like the name implies, it is always on and I almost never change the setting. Does exactly what it is supposed to and sounds great.

Alright gang, some great info. Now here's a side question; After tuner comes the DOD env. filter. I use it mainly in the non-sweep mode, not as an effect but as a way to boost lows. My understanding, incomplete, is that this pedal is band pass. Using the pedal changes the sound greatly, and can be blended in or out as desired. Am I by any chance already doing a sort of high pass when I dial the effect amount downward? When I do so it brings the straight sound of that bass right back. When I dial in more effect it is instant low end boost. It's the old dub reggae trick.
