What is "vote"?

Solution
It's the best new feature: in the middle of a long thread, when somebody suddenly brings the light, you vote for his comment on the right side.
Then when reader want to avoid reading 200 pages of comments, they can sort by votes instead of date, and the best comment will show up first.

It's not so much intended to let people express if the agree or not about a personal opinion, but more to help isolating the most useful and relevant answer in the middle of a long thread.

Imagine a technical question, people reply, and after 3 pages, Agedhorse of Wasnex comes in and give the good answer. You should vote for such comments, so that others will be able to find them easily.
I see a new tab/button at the top right of each thread that allows one to sort by date or by "vote," so I'm assuming it's some method of allowing people to assign value to answers to questions or opinions. However, I don't see a way to actually "cast a vote" for a specific post. Is that only the purview of paid subscribers?

I get the value of it, but didn't understand/see how to cast the vote. Now it's painfully obvious... the first post of a thread doesn't have the vote caret thingie option to the right of the post, but all the others do. Makes sense. Very nice... and thank you.

1. So is it possible to cast a "down-vote"? If not, why not?

2. What is now the purpose or utility of Likes, since they're not sortable? Are there any practical instances where one would register a Like but not cast an up-vote, or vice versa?
A "like," as I see it, simply means you enjoyed the post in some way, but not necessarily that it was a useful, constructive post. It could be a simple agreement of opinion, acknowledgement of amusement, or anything else positive. A "vote," however, would usually indicate that that the receiving post was found to be a valuable answer to the original post or contribution to the ensuing discussion.

Sorry, but since Likes carry no real weight, and up-votes do, I'm adding up-votes to all of my Likes, and using only up-votes going forward.

Alsso, it appears that the up-vote function is not available for the initial post in any given thread. Is there any good reason for that?

I have no official standing here, so this is just my opinion (and unrequested, at that), but using an "upvote" in place of simply "liking" something that you find amusing, entertaining, or that isn't necessarily helpful to the question at hand would seem to severely weaken the whole point of being able to sort by "vote,", i.e., finding the most helpful posts, rather than the most entertaining.

I think the lack of "upvote" option to the initial post in a thread strengthens the idea that "upvotes" should be used for valuable, helpful responses to requests, inquiries, and other questions inherent in the initial post. The ONLY potentially problematic issue I can see with this is if someone, out of the goodness of their heart/brain, decides to OPEN a thread with a bevy of useful information, rather than a question or request for other input.
