What are your use cases?
What works well for you?
What is the next problem to solve?
What are your desert island bits?
What is the one lesson you'd share about your journey?
2003 Apple Power Macintosh G5 dual 2.0 GHz processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB and 1 TB SATA-1 HDDs (might actually be two 1TB HDDs, can't remember if I upgraded the system drive).
Apple Logic Pro 7.2
M-Audio Delta 1010 PCI-x (8 in/8 out analogue, 2 in/2 out digital, MIDI, 24-bit/96 KHz)
M-Audio Octane preamps (8 ea)
PreSonus Central Station monitor controller
M-Audio Studiophile BX8 monitors
Sony MDR-7506 headphones
Sennheiser HD280 Pro headphones
No room treatment
Countryman Type 85 DI
Cuniberti Re-Amp
M-Audio Solaris large diaphragm condenser mics (matched pair)
Shure Beta 57A and Beta 52A dynamic mics
Ultimate Support Systems and Atlas Sound mic stands
Mogami Gold mic cables, Monster 500 interconnects
Typically, when I record my bass, I use the Countryman Type 85 DI as a safety DI track straight out of my instrument, in case I want to re-amp it later, and take the DI output of my bass preamp (whichever I happen to be using) as the main sound. I pretty much never mic an amp for bass.
Current bass preamps I have available to me are the DI from the head in my Mesa/Boogie Walkabout Scout 12 combo, a Boss BB-1X Bass Driver pedal, a Boss AD-2 Acoustic Preamp pedal, and a DSM & Humboldt Electronics Simplifier Bass Station. Also my Boss GT-1000Core, but it doesn't have balanced outs.
Use case was originally producing recordings for release for my former band, is now producing recordings for myself. What works well for me is all of it. The next problem to solve is upgrading to a newer computer, interface, and current version of Logic Pro. The OS is now so old that I can no longer connect to the Internet with that machine, and cannot even connect easily to my home network, because the WiFi in it is too old. This will not be happening any time soon. I am much more likely to add RAM and change out the HDDs for SSDs. Since my needs are not extensive, I don't really need to upgrade those parts, however.
Desert island bits? Really just the Countryman, Re-Amp, and Beta mics, to a much lesser extent the Sony headphones. All of these could be, would be, and are used in high-end studios all over the world.
One lesson I would share is that you do not need rarefied gear, like $1500 per channel mic pres or $1500 mics, to produce world-class recordings. The people who buy that stuff absolutely swear by it, because they have to, or they would feel horribly foolish for having bought it. Listen with your ears, not your eyes or your wallet or your fears or your ego.
Get yourself a matched pair of Rode NT1A mics and a matched pair of Rode NT5s. There is a reason they are so highly regarded. Shure Beta 56A/57A mics are far superior to the obsolete SM56/SM57 mics. Also, the Shure Beta 87A is a wonderful handheld condenser mic.
