What is your current recording rig?

I record on a Toft ATB32, through an Antelope Orion32 into an AMD Ryzen laptop with Waveform DAW. Monitoring is done on Tannoy Golds with Adam Audio sub. Lots of room treatment with homemade bass traps and diffusers. Very happy with the Toft, the channel eqs are worth the price alone. I also have some outboard equipment to keep my workflow as far out of the box as possible.

I do friends bands mostly, some radio ads, larger acts that play live at the venue for my personal growth. Trying to create a destination package for bands with ski/rafting/hiking/dining/lodging but we’ll see. Need to clean up the live room and finish the vocal and amp booths and add a control room divider.

I wouldn’t say I have any desert island bits, gear is always upgradeable or swappable for a different style/feel. Good sounding/neutral room with talented players is number one.

Lesson I wish I had learned sooner is that perfect is the enemy of good. Spend your time at the beginning to capture good sounds and mix it while it’s fresh and everyone is focused/engaged. Dragging the process out and playing around in the box trying to chase every little thing is counterproductive and turns people off.

How has that ATB32 held up over the years? I assume you bought it ( and the Antelope ) a while back? ( got the same setup, but have used it little, yet )

M3 MacBook Pro
Logic
Focusrite of some sort or a presonus series 3 32r, depending on the use case.

Bass rig is an ampeg b-15r mic'd up with an Audio Technica ATM-25. Sounds great for my use cases. We record in a huge room with some sound treatment. The floors are concrete and the walls are concrete. No vibrations or resonate frequencies. Gave up sending a dry signal as the "wet" setup sounds better.

Old Lenova laptop
Scarlet solo
Old FSI IEM
Ableton

The last few sessions have been backing tracks for cabaret shows on cruise ships. Songs arranged and charted by a friend who does musical theatre professionally. I read off my IPad, track bass dry and let them do the plugins and treatment in production. I mainly use my ‘75 Precision or Fender RBV. I used my ‘78 Stingray for some Disco stuff, too.

Computer: Mac M2

DAW: FL Studio for tracking/midi, Reaper for mixing

Interface: Apollo Twin X

Chain: MIM JB>Sushi Box More>Empress Compressor>RNDI

Monitors: JBL 305
Cans: Slate VSX for mixing

Treatment: None (in an ok but less than ideal sounding room)

Use cases: solo creative projects mostly for practice with recording. Hopefully eventually some remote tracking.

What works well: ease of upstart (I only need to press a single button to start playing).

Next problem to solve: moving into a more accommodating space that I can treat (in this economy???)

Desert Island Bits: 60's P Bass, LA2A, original RAT

Lesson learned: Only buy things that you have an immediate and obvious use for!

My recording setup is mobile.
Zoom L-20, about a dozen mics and a few passive D.I.'s together with some isolating headphones. Recorded many jams/rehearsals to learn the gear, then I recorded our latest EP with it. The drums sound massive. Proof you don't need really expensive gear to get a decent band sound.

My fave mics have been the SM57, given how flexible they are, and how easy it is to get a good sound with them on guitars & snare drum, so I have a few of them.
Everything goes thru Reaper. I love Reaper. REAPER | Audio Production Without Limits

No issues at all. The ATB was a sweetwater demo unit and has some cosmetic issues but is fully functional and sounds great to my ears. Love the eq much more than any plugin Ive tried. I was worried about the orion as a lot of people seemed to have issues with drivers but it has been flawless for me and super transparent.

A variety of inputs (mics, preamp/fx hardware) into either a Presonus 1824c, Focusrite 18i20 or and SSL2+ into Logic on a M2 Mac Studio. When recording vocals, I run the signal through a Presonus Studio Channel. I have a set of Mackie monitors but I mostly use headphones (Sennheiser HD 600) when tracking and mixing.

I have a few midi keyboard controllers and a Novation Circuit Tracks if I want to get fancy. Also have a small semi-modular synth rig.

Been considering messing around with Ableton Live for non-linear multi track stuff.

The DI out of my bass amp into my old Yamaha O1V for it's compression, then into one of four Behringer ADA8200's which are connected to a RME RayDat. I used to build my own computers, but now I use a Dell R730 server running Windows 10 and Sonar.

Curious to hear what folks are recording with these days. Tell me about your...
- computer
- DAW
- interface
- recording chain up to interface
- monitors / cans
- room treatment

What are your use cases?
What works well for you?
What is the next problem to solve?
What are your desert island bits?

What is the one lesson you'd share about your journey?

2003 Apple Power Macintosh G5 dual 2.0 GHz processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB and 1 TB SATA-1 HDDs (might actually be two 1TB HDDs, can't remember if I upgraded the system drive).
Apple Logic Pro 7.2
M-Audio Delta 1010 PCI-x (8 in/8 out analogue, 2 in/2 out digital, MIDI, 24-bit/96 KHz)
M-Audio Octane preamps (8 ea)
PreSonus Central Station monitor controller
M-Audio Studiophile BX8 monitors
Sony MDR-7506 headphones
Sennheiser HD280 Pro headphones
No room treatment
Countryman Type 85 DI
Cuniberti Re-Amp
M-Audio Solaris large diaphragm condenser mics (matched pair)
Shure Beta 57A and Beta 52A dynamic mics
Ultimate Support Systems and Atlas Sound mic stands
Mogami Gold mic cables, Monster 500 interconnects

Typically, when I record my bass, I use the Countryman Type 85 DI as a safety DI track straight out of my instrument, in case I want to re-amp it later, and take the DI output of my bass preamp (whichever I happen to be using) as the main sound. I pretty much never mic an amp for bass.

Current bass preamps I have available to me are the DI from the head in my Mesa/Boogie Walkabout Scout 12 combo, a Boss BB-1X Bass Driver pedal, a Boss AD-2 Acoustic Preamp pedal, and a DSM & Humboldt Electronics Simplifier Bass Station. Also my Boss GT-1000Core, but it doesn't have balanced outs.

Use case was originally producing recordings for release for my former band, is now producing recordings for myself. What works well for me is all of it. The next problem to solve is upgrading to a newer computer, interface, and current version of Logic Pro. The OS is now so old that I can no longer connect to the Internet with that machine, and cannot even connect easily to my home network, because the WiFi in it is too old. This will not be happening any time soon. I am much more likely to add RAM and change out the HDDs for SSDs. Since my needs are not extensive, I don't really need to upgrade those parts, however.

Desert island bits? Really just the Countryman, Re-Amp, and Beta mics, to a much lesser extent the Sony headphones. All of these could be, would be, and are used in high-end studios all over the world.

One lesson I would share is that you do not need rarefied gear, like $1500 per channel mic pres or $1500 mics, to produce world-class recordings. The people who buy that stuff absolutely swear by it, because they have to, or they would feel horribly foolish for having bought it. Listen with your ears, not your eyes or your wallet or your fears or your ego.

Get yourself a matched pair of Rode NT1A mics and a matched pair of Rode NT5s. There is a reason they are so highly regarded. Shure Beta 56A/57A mics are far superior to the obsolete SM56/SM57 mics. Also, the Shure Beta 87A is a wonderful handheld condenser mic.

computer 8-core i7 system from a DAW PC builder
DAW Reaper
interface RME UCX
recording chain up to interface Neve RNDI for guitar/bass, mics direct into interface
monitors / cans Dynaudio BM5A, Audio-Technica ATH-M50X
room treatment None (I listen on a handful of different playback systems to verify a mix is working)

What are your use cases?
writing/recording material for my own albums
What works well for you? One thing is working out compositional stuff on piano before transposing to other instruments (since I'm more of a keyboardist than guitarist)
What is the next problem to solve? How to get wealthy enough to afford a Wal bass or two and an original OB-X and Jupiter 8? (kidding)
What are your desert island bits? Computer loaded with good plugins/libraries is #1 essential thing, beyond that, hard to say.

What is the one lesson you'd share about your journey?
That I wish I'd been able to learn some highly effective mixing tips early in the game and saved myself years of trial and error.

Interesting thread:
- Computer: whatever Apple machine is around
- interface: Steinberg UR22
- Direct signal from a Radial JDI
- In parallel: preamp of some sort (I like my Jule Monique a lot, but also use an Origin SV via an Origin Compressor or some Darkglass pedal and compressor).
That way I can provide a clean direct signal from the DI, and a colored signal with effects, tube flavor, etc.)
Basses: from Fender precision with flats to Stingray 5 or Yamaha BBP35 (the latter being my favorite).

Computer: Apple Mac Mini M1

DAW: Garage Band

Interface: MOTU M4

Recording chain up to interface: Bass - Chain A + Chain B - MOTU M4
Chain A. Arkham Zephyr (preamp) - Black Lion B173 (Mic Pre)

Chain B. Broughton Resonant Filter (HPF/LPF) - Doc Lloyd LA-2A (compressor) - Arkham Oracle (preamp) - GSS Sumo (amp) - Ampeg B15 cabinet - Hiel PR40 (mic) - Black Lion B173 (Mic Pre) - Black Lion B172a (1176/LA-2A compressor)

Monitors / cans: KRK Rokit 7" monitors, KRK 12" sub

Room treatment: Auralex isolation platforms for a speakers

What is the next problem to solve? Moving away from Garage Band and learn Logic Pro

What are your use cases?
  • Using my setup for Online Lessons, Projects both online and in-studio files, Content Creation
What works well for you?
  • Online lessons with multiple cam
What is the next problem to solve?
  • Im doing alot of vid and audio simultaneously so at the most basic level having a 'repeatable system' of setup to quickly get up and running in my apt and achieving consistant predicable results. Setting up more templates and custom setting on my camera and within Logic and MOTU AVB Mixer
What are your desert island bits?
  • Definitely my Furch SW5 bass and as of late, my Genelec monitors. I like my gear and familiar/comfortable with it but nothing really grabs me as 'must pack for the island'.

What is the one lesson you'd share about your journey?
  • There's NO skipping "the learning curve". No matter how much you 'prep plan and study', you'll still need to 'go through the process' to improve and better understand it.
