What to look for in a Backup Bass?

Why not get a Schecter Diamond P? It'll have vintage tones and the feel of your current bass. It comes in active or passive.

because two basses with drastically different tone or output levels, for example, can be a problem if you have to do a quick swap live.

My bass has the active pickups

Are they EMG HZ pickups, or just EMG pickups? The EMG HZ pickups are passive, and the bass has an active circuit. Not the same as active pickups. I've tried that model of bass before and it had EMG HZ pickups, which many people are not a big fan of...

Oh, I thought that if it was an active bass that the pickups were active too. It has the EMG HZ pickups

I'm a little unclear on the OP. A backup is something really similar that runs a very close 2nd place to your main player. The OP then says he wants something that offers a different tone and maybe feel.
IF it's the latter, I would suggest something like the passive P/J as it fills another large tonal zone like the original bass.
