Which Fender Mustang bass?

I bought a pj when they first came out and it was pretty much the only choice at the time. It’s a great little bass, except for the cheap, imprecise tuners. The P pickup in it is surprisingly good. But if I were to get one now, it would be a Vintera or JMJ. I prefer the more classic design (I had a ‘68 back in the 70’s).

I bought the P/J LE ebony because I had this crazy idea to replace the pickups with the EMG GZR P/J set and make it my doom metal bass more or less. I accomplished that and have no regrets but then Fender came out with the JMJ in black and now I kind of wish I waited because I think what I really wanted all along was an old school looking and sounding short scale. Oh well, time to save up again and play the waiting game lol

I was considering a Mustang but ending up buying one of these, a Traveler TB-4P (32" scale). It somewhat resembles the Mustang Bass but not in every respect. Fits in an overhead bin of an airplane and sounds really good:

i had one of those! the bass is 32" scale, but the good news is it uses 34" strings, which means the widest selection of strings is available for it. i didn't love the tuners, but it was very comfortable and light. i still like my MiM PJ mustang tone better, but i found the TB-4P more comfortable.

Are you checking sweetwater and CME? They (and maybe other stores) get their own limited edition colors, so you have to order from them to get something other than the standard white and daphne blue. I agree they are great to mod because of the options that drop in, but don’t let that make you think they NEED to be modded. I switched the pickups and tuners in mine, but it sounded good as is. Been wondering about the quality of the maple neck... any gloss to it? How’re the fret ends? Same profile as the rosewood p/j’s?

The quality on mine is great. Satin on the back, high gloss on the fretboard. Really nice feel. The fret ends on mine were good, maybe a tiny bit of sprout but not bad for taking delivery in January. I took it to my guy for a setup but honestly don’t know if he did any filing or not since it was starting to warm up anyways.

I’m curious about Mustang too,How’s the tone? First bass I learned was my brother’s ‘66 Mustang Bass.
Which one has the vintage mustang vibe and the bootylicious bottoms?
JMJ,
Vintera,
Performer
or Squire?
