Which Recordings would be listed in a TalkBass Basic Library?

Two more bands to check out are Thin Lizzy and Midnight Oil.

Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy is not one of my favourite bass players, but he's one of my absolute favourite songwriters! I suggest these albums:

Thin Lizzy - Bad Reputation (1977)
Thin Lizzy - Jailbreak (1976)
Thin Lizzy - Thin Lizzy (1971)

Midnight Oil is relatively unknown outside Australia because everybody else cannot get what they're singing about, but to me it was a band on par with more fortunate R.E.M. and Simple Minds when it comes to songwriting, only more rockers. They had various bass players, but IMHO the bass in their songs is very often nice (although simple, not hard technically) and always, always important:

Midnight Oil - Diesel and Dust (1988)
Midnight Oil - Earth and Sun and Moon (1993)
Midnight Oil - Red Sails in the Sunset (1984)

I disagree, You have to look for patterns within this thread. There are multiple albums that have been named many times. THOSE are the money. Let the collective bass player conscience be heard! ALL of the albums listed have great bass lines. Everyone is a different player and has different influences. I got a lot out of this thread, including a great place to audition most of these albums for free.....Grooveshark.com....This thread should be an endless list! Keep it going! Thanks everyone!

So the idea is that we list every piece of music ever?

"Good" music is entirely subjective to whoever is listening.

Seems like an exercise in futility to me.

That's pretty much the pattern for most threads isn't it? Whenever anyone asks for a recommendation for a bass or an amp or a set of strings, or suggestions on studies or the best players or the best recordings, the answer is ...every one of them! It's whatever someone likes and everybody likes something different and it's absolutely irrelevant to what the OP or anyone else may want, like or need.
