Who is your most underrated bassist?...

The title says it all. Who is the guy that you think absolutely KILLS it that doesn't get the recognition of some of the top-shelf bassists that we're all accustomed to hearing about. I'll throw my hat in for Mike Gordon. His tone and technique is way over what he gets credit for. Who does it for you??
Dal Lilker of Brutal Truth / Nuclear Assault / S.O.D.

Dave Edwardson of Neurosis. Even I, as a big fan, took a long time to really appreciate his playing. The songwriting and production values of his band don't really lend themselves to virtuosic-type playing. The bludgeoning atmospherics of their sound tends to bury his playing. I starting catching on to his skill after seeing them live, watching his hands, seeing there was a lot going on as a foundation to the overall sound.

Also, I don't think enough people talk about Colin Moulding. He might be the most melodic and tasteful pop/rock player on the planet.
Absolutely agree about Colin Moulding!

Underrated is a relative term when you remember we're all bassists here. We appreciate some guys who have never been household names. Plus, US and UK have different perspectives. For all I know Colin Moulding is widely idolized in the UK. He oughtta be!

I'm adding Pete Quaiffe and Graham Maby.

Yes - Graham Maby has always been on my list of the best. If you haven't seen the Joe Jackson episode of "Rock Goes To College" then do yourself a favor and indulge.

This might sound whacky...Tom Scholz. For at least the first few Boston records he played all the bass parts. When I listen to the isolated tracks, his basslines feel very atypical to me. He for sure keeps you guessing. Not at all a boring "guitarist just doubling the rhythm on bass."

I don't love the style, and I guess I don't really appreciate him as a bass player, but I at least respect the hell out of it for being so...not what I expected. The bass bounces around a lot but never hogs the spotlight. My 2 cents.
