Will a head and cab be better than a combo

Excellent replies so far.
I like using a combo amp when I'm on a big stage with FOH support and there are other acts on the bill, causing me to have to hustle quickly on and off stage.
I'm always a bit obsessive about bringing two of everything, in case something breaks...

Good advice. I wish I could follow the "hustle quickly" part especially. I have to get my upright disconnected from a pedal board, get the bass off stage to a safe (large) spot, then go back for pedals, head, cab. It is not a fast operation, and I always find myself (usually politely) imploring those mounting the stage to allow me to get the large fragile stuff out of their way before they block my egress.

The "two of everything" is me, too, and I find it is often employed helping the guitarist or fixing our barely adequate PA—batteries, tuner, guitar stand, strap, instrument cable, amp head, speaker cord, extension chord, mic cable, DI, mic, etc. LOL.

It's unbelievable to me how many musicians don't bring an extension cord. Mine's always available! :rollno:

Spending big money on a combo makes no sense. Resale value is terrible. Just look around for proof.

Best way to go is a used name brand class D head and cabinet of your choice. Mix and match sizes and numbers until you find the best combinations for you. Plus, the resale is always very good on buying used name brand and trading/selling later. Name brand separates retain value esp if you get good deals on lightly used stuff. Just look at the classifieds here. Subways, tone hammers all sell quickly. My opinion on the matter.

IMHO, you are right.

Yet, OP is in New Zealand, I believe. Getting used gear, and getting things shipped from TB classified is probably challenging.
