Winter Build Off 2023: Get Ready

...so you have fodder for assembly builds :D

It's super nerdy to salvage a totally messed up build. And extra super nerdy if you do it with a tiny roll of carbon fiber contributing, I think.

My thoughts went immediately to Devo-esque equipment nerdily bodged onto basses with shiny aluminum tape, etc... Probably since I'm old enough to remember Devo. :hyper:

I like to do scratch builds. If I mess one up, I usually will never go back to it. I'll perhaps grab some parts off of it, but once it's messed up, I typically just throw it out. Or keep it around as a reminder of what not to do next time.

Hey, I resemble that remark!

Also I think there should be a category for unfinished builds from the summer build-off....
Previously unfinished builds are welcome! Depending on where they are in the process, it can be submitted again as either a Partial Build or an Assembly Build. Or switch it over to long scale guitar and submit as an Exhibition build :D

My build will be low tech. I want to recreate an instrument from a fantasy novel, which is set on a faraway planet where technology is at horse-and-cart level.

The instrument isn't clearly described in the novel, so the whole project requires gathering information scattered through the book in order to get a clear idea of the music and the bands that this thing would be a part of.

Nerdy enough?

I for one, encourage broad interpretation of the theme. :bookworm:

On the one hand you could make a fantasy based design complete with 7 foot tall cosplay costume for your Gwar-meets-Game-of-Thrones metal band.

Or just build what you normally build. Obsessively. In your basement. Alone with no friends.

The possibilities are endless. :bag: :cigar:
Since mine is going to be a 4004/3/1
RIC shaped object, it will bring out all the "but it's not a real ric" nerds.needs..

NO, it's Not a "real RIC"
It's a REAL "SWEET TREET".

34" scale . Check
No RIC-O-Sound. Check.
4001 / 4 dot marker rosewood fretboard. Check.
A bridge that is muteless, allows palm muting, and doesn't try and fold itself in half? Check.
Pickups that are straight in their cavities? Check
Non standard pickups (in the RIC placements) check.
Brass nut? Check.
Under 9 lbs? Check.
Will be complete in less than 3 years?
KILLER FLAMED 1200 YEAR OLD CALIFORNIA REDWOOD? No RIC would wear that!

Those are a nice start!
I think I’ll enter two. My unfinished scratch from the summer, unless I finish by then. And a new scratch. If all goes as planned I’ll have two new basses. If things go as I fear, I’ll have two s
Assembly entries for the next summer build off.

She wrote the Dragonriders of Pern books.
Some of the offshoot stories were about a young girl musician. Part of her apprenticeship was building her own instrument. That kind of sparked my interest.
I haven’t read any of her stuff since the early 80s, so could be off. But I don’t think so.
Maybe a revisit to Pern is in order.
