Winter Build Off 2024 - Best Bass For...

Well. Doesn’t seem likely that any of my builds will get finished.

The cancer is back, and much worse than last time…. Aggressive and widespread… prostate, a mass in my abdomen, and spread throughout my lungs and bones. I’ll probably check in to see the awesome things talk are building while I’m in treatment though. Thank you all for the years of inspiration, tips, and forum friendship :)
I'm so sorry to hear this. :(

Man, that sucks. $#%& cancer... :(

But, you're still here, we're still here, so let's enjoy what we can while we can. I know you've been a staple of this place since I joined, and I've really enjoyed your builds, comments, and general attitude towards bass and life. Hang in there, thoughts and prayers heading your way

Very sorry to hear this. I'm a 5 year survivor, so I still get scans every 4 months. Both my parents had it, my sister, grand dad - runs in my family. Best of luck beating it again.

i made it to 4 years after my last fight.

This is one of the reasons I’ve never uttered that so common phrase “I beat cancer”. Cancer is insidious. It hides. Looks for weaknesses. And it can come back with a fury if it chooses.

I hope you never, ever need to deal with it again.

Thank you for the kind words. I’ve had 55 good years so far, and I’m grateful for every single one of them. I’m gonna give it my best to squeeze a few more out of this life.

keep on keeping on, my friend.

"participants have noted that instruments in current fashion tend to place well, as well as iconic styles including fender-shaped objects."

This is exactly why I didn't take it personally when my first entry came in last place. In addition to being a novice builder, I also had a design that was unusual in many ways. Plus there are as many people that hate the Steelers as there are that love them (the price of being consistently excellent) so frankly I was just tickled pink that anybody voted for me at all.

I very much hope to participate in the next one.

I do have one serious question though. What if someone's project fits into more than one category? For example, say somebody just bought a 12-string guitar kit because they had always wanted a 12-string guitar but didn't feel like they could justify what purchasing what they want new would go for. Again, just as an example. Would that person enter into the assembly build or the non-bass category? Or would non-bass assembly builds just be too far out of the scope of what we're doing here to be entered at all? The answer to this may affect when my hypothetical person hypothetically begins working on his hypothetical kit.

Non-bass would be my vote.

It would have to meet the 0.083" minimum diameter lowest string rule in order to be entered into Assembly, so I think a 12er guitar would have to go into Non-Bass. The main drawback of the non-bass category is that everyone competes directly against one another. A Solo Guitars telecaster kit guitar could compete directly with a scratch built ribbon controller bass synth and everyone just has to deal with it. :D
