Winter Build Off 2024 Lonnybass Edition: Best Bass For Over-Extending Myself!

Some experimenting with color to highlight the burled grain in the box elder, using some cutoffs from the body. The sample piece has Transtint Perfect Red applied across the top section of burl, and TT Red Mahogany across the bottom section, both carefully applied to the burls using a small artist paintbrush.

They definitely bring a nice element of additional pop to the wood compared to the unfinished body as shown in the picture. I think Perfect Red looks better here, as the Red Mahogany comes across a bit too brown (there are already a lot of brown tones in the top).

That's an interesting piece of wood, what is it? Is that a sapwood/ heartwood thing going on there?

I really hope I can get my kids interested in building basses like that, that's such a lovely way of bonding with your kids.
That fingerboard slab is grafted pistachio…I’ve used it on another build and it looks and sounds fantastic. The three-tone color scheme of the graft is just so unique and seemed to be a perfect complement to the burl topwood.

I built my first bass with my dad back in 2000…never in a million years did I ever imagine that my little guy would keep the tradition alive. It’s been incredibly rewarding to work with him on this batch of instruments, including one he spec’d out for himself. He’s WAY into this!
