woud you trade a USA G&L sb2 for a Ibanez SR 1300e w nordies?

3 great basses mentioned in your OP.

for prog rock, with a more metal flair, I would opt for the ibanez. It will probably be more versatile tone-wise. If it is more classic rock oriented prog rock, the SB-2 may be better. The ibanez will be a totally different beast from the Fender, where the G&L will be incredibly similar.

do whatcha want.

HI
would like some opinions.. I have a new Fender Elite on the way( maple board)-- my gigging bass for 8 yrs is a USA G&L SB2 w maple board which I enjoy- though would like a 24 fret bass- thinking of selling it off the G&L to buy a 2017 Ibanez SR 1300e(or possibly the 1400e) What seems interesting about the Ibanez it has a wenge neck which I haven't had before and the pencil thin neck they are known for. I play progressive rock - which I think this bass would fit nicely
what I am unsure about is the build quality - I assume some short cuts have been made to keep the price low??.

anyone have some time with the Ibanez SR 1300e. ?

cheers

Most (not all) bass players in the "Symphonic" sub genre of Prog music, string type (usually rounds or very very bright pressurewounds) and newness/freshness will be the biggest factors - regardless of what bass you use

With that said, I used to own a SR 1205.......it was decent, I didnt like the Nords for the type variety dance music that I do ......Thinking back, they may be a good pickup for Prog. My 1205 was more like a 'woodier" Ken Smith.....The preamp, especially with its Q-mid set point choices, was very useable

However, in lieu of everything I said above, if your G&L SB2 is a USA version, I would vote "No".

What else do you like about the Ibanez besides the 24 frets? There are other basses that have 24 frets that you could look into as well. The EBMM Bongo, for one. You may love the Ibanez, but I would recommend trying to find something used so that if you decide you don't like it, you don't lose out on too much money. You can always buy another used SB-2 if that ends up happening.

I also liked that the neck felt very thin and the body is tapered thin around the edges.. totally different feel to the fender recipe..The other bass I had on my list was the carvin bromberg standard. Had a similar price point to the ibanez.and similar neck profile.. But Carvin doesnt offer the S model. Any more carvin only offers the bromberg with the maple top which is not my thing .

Haven't played the SR1300e, but just looking at the spec sheet it looks like a hella nice bass.

Unless the SB-2 is loaded with factory upgrades, or unless it is such an extraordinary example that I knew I could never get another one as good, then I would trade the SB-2 for a SR1300e in a heartbeat.

Thanks for the Ibanez GAS, btw! ;)

I mean, for what you're looking for, it sounds reasonable to me. I think people saying no to the swap are not taking into consideration what you are looking for. You want 24 frets. That's not something I want, but that's me. I love my SB-2, but I've also been a very big fan of the Nordie equipped Ibbys. So with the understanding that you will lose some value buy selling used to buy new, I would absolutely do what you're talking about. But then again, if it was me, I'd probably have just not gotten the new Fender and kept the SB-2 and Ibanez instead.
