Your Shortscale Flatwound Bass Strings.....

My shortscale is a Gibson SG and it wears LaBella 760fl shorts. They fit perfectly and sound great. My shortscale Jag, used by my daughter, wears GHS Precision Flats and they fit that bass perfectly as well. Both are excellent strings with different tones. Either way it's a win for those basses.

I have three short scales.

Fender Coronado II
Requires medium scale strings
I use D'Addario Chromes 45-100 Medium Scale set

Guild Starfire II
Requires medium scale strings
I use D'Addario Chromes 45-100 Medium Scale set or La Bella deep talking medium scale

Ibanez Mikro 4-String
Requires short scale no longer than 32" winding
I have D'Addario Black nylon tapes short scale set on it.

I have a 5 string Mikro as well but it has rounds. DR Neon Short Scale 5 string set.

I have Labella Low Tension Flexible Flats on My Bronco (42/56/70/100)

Perfect fit, butter smooth, easy playing and easy on the neck tension.

Little bit different sound. More of a "stand up" tone. Nice even tone across the fret board.

SlapInFunk:. How do you like the Dad Black Tapes on your Mikro? Nice deep tone?

I have three short short scales (though two are Ibanez Mikros (28.6" scale), one black and one walnut):

I first put GHS Precision flats (GHS 3020) on the black Mikro, because I had them on another bass and liked 'em a lot. But didn't like them at all on the Mikro. Switched to D'addario XL Chromes (ECB81S). Liked those a lot and they fit fine. But replaced them with TIJF324's, just to try them out. Did end up with overwrap on the E string, but wasn't a big deal at all (as SlapInFunk has said in various forums over the years - the TI's are very flexible, and can generally over-wrap without issue). That said, for the price difference, I didn't actually notice much tonal difference between the TI's and the Chromes, which was a little weird. After everything I'd read about the TI's I guess I kind of expected them to be magical. Or maybe my ears just aren't that great :) I'm now in the process of defretting the black Mikro, and am planning on D'Addario Black Nylon Tapes (though am also considering the La Bella Black Nylon tapes).

On the walnut Mikro, I have La Bella Copper White Nylon tapes, and honestly, think they are superb. Seriously. Just a beautiful sound, feel, and playability.

The third short scale is super short. It is an Ohana OBU-22 AEB. 24.5" scale length. Uses regular strings, not the rubber ones. It came with some custom-length D'Addario phosphor-bronze strings, which I hated. Nothing else fit it, so I carved some new, longer, bridge pins, and got a slew of nylon spacers. Now I can put on any ordinary short-scale strings (of reasonable tension), and add spacers to make them fit. The extra ball-end string length sits inside the body, resting comfortable on a small bit of foam. Right now I have D'Addario Black Nylon tapes on it. Sounds very earthy and upright.

Have about 30 shorties.
I use a variety of strings.
GHS: 3070 Brite, 3020 Precision, 3060 Tapes
D'Addario: ECB81S Chromes
La Bella: 760FS Deep Talkin Flatwound, 760 FHBB Beatle Bass Flats, 760 NHBB Beatle Bass Tapes, 750 N Black Tapewound, 760 N-B Black Tapewound 5 string, 750C Copper White Tape, 750T White Nylon
Guild: B-400N Black Nylon Tape
Aquila: Silver Rumblers

I was looking on your site and I didn't see a 45-100 medium scale set. Is that something new?

I have a 30" scale Long Horn bass which has small holes on the tuning pegs. I was thinking of using La Bella LTF-4A-S Low Tension Flexible Flats Short Scale bass strings. Does anyone know if the ends are tapered to fit the small holed tuning pegs?

The ends on the La Bella Low Tension Short Scale Flats are pretty spindly.....they don't look anything like what you've got on there now...

I'm quite certain the silk ends will go through those holes.....

What brand of shortscale do you own?

What brand of flatwounds are on it if you're using flats?

Are they the correct winding length for that bass? ( don't want to hear about thick 'overwraps' on the E etc.)

Thanks....

1) I currently have 6 shorts scale basses.

2) Only one of them - an Epiphone EA-260 - has flats on it at the moment. They're La Bellas; old ones.

3) Yes, the flats on the Epi are the correct length (Medium scale). All of them have the proper length strings. :)

I play a '78 Fender MusicMaster and just last week replaced the original Fender Flats with a set of LaBella Deep Talkin' Flats. The short scale set is the proper winding length for that bass. Nice tone, great sustain.

I have the La Bella Low Tension Short Scale Flats on my Lonfhorn now and they are working great. I'm looking forward to see how they sound with my band later next week. It doesn't hurt how the brown silks work with its copper finish too!
