I have three short short scales (though two are Ibanez Mikros (28.6" scale), one black and one walnut):
I first put GHS Precision flats (GHS 3020) on the black Mikro, because I had them on another bass and liked 'em a lot. But didn't like them at all on the Mikro. Switched to D'addario XL Chromes (ECB81S). Liked those a lot and they fit fine. But replaced them with TIJF324's, just to try them out. Did end up with overwrap on the E string, but wasn't a big deal at all (as SlapInFunk has said in various forums over the years - the TI's are very flexible, and can generally over-wrap without issue). That said, for the price difference, I didn't actually notice much tonal difference between the TI's and the Chromes, which was a little weird. After everything I'd read about the TI's I guess I kind of expected them to be magical. Or maybe my ears just aren't that great
I'm now in the process of defretting the black Mikro, and am planning on D'Addario Black Nylon Tapes (though am also considering the La Bella Black Nylon tapes).
On the walnut Mikro, I have La Bella Copper White Nylon tapes, and honestly, think they are superb. Seriously. Just a beautiful sound, feel, and playability.
The third short scale is super short. It is an Ohana OBU-22 AEB. 24.5" scale length. Uses regular strings, not the rubber ones. It came with some custom-length D'Addario phosphor-bronze strings, which I hated. Nothing else fit it, so I carved some new, longer, bridge pins, and got a slew of nylon spacers. Now I can put on any ordinary short-scale strings (of reasonable tension), and add spacers to make them fit. The extra ball-end string length sits inside the body, resting comfortable on a small bit of foam. Right now I have D'Addario Black Nylon tapes on it. Sounds very earthy and upright.
