Double Bass Your top 5 favorite upright bass players

Scott LaFaro
Dave Holland
Christian McBride
Phil Donkin
Pablo Martin Caminero
(just in this moment...;) but as said before... there are lots and lots of other great players... and just a minority get "up to the radar" of most people..:p)

There are so many unsung cats out there that are/were amazing players!
JJ avenel, Kent Carter, anders jormin, palle danielsson, Heinz van de gein!
JJ Avenel had a huge impact on me and for me is such a wonderful player… don’t discount the players that offer a unique vision (isn’t that what music is about??)
By the way... the correct spelling is Hein van de Geyn....;)
and not to forget about Arild Andersen from North Europe...:p

I don't think I can do a top 5 either.

Butch Warren is the sound in my head.

Sam Jones is a similar player with a longer recording career.

Ray Brown defines an entire category of a particular kind of excellence that I consider central to what I am aspiring to. People like John Clayton, Christian McBride, and Peter Washington all are all taking that excellence forward.

There are people like Keter Betts and Andrew Simpkins, Doug Watkins, etc

Scott LaFaro and NHOP took things in a different direction as did Charnett Moffitt.

Dave Holland.

Mingus was an evil genius.

I'm grateful for all of them and more.

I aspire to some day be one of my favorite bassist too, but I have a long way to go

Five that I've seen and heard up close and personal so I know how great they also were live are:
Sam Jones, Richard Davis, Mingus, NHOP, and Miroslav Vitous. There are many others. The opportunities that used to exist to hear great players up close are one of those things that I miss now.

So many greats already listed.
Ron Brooks had an impact because he was the first I ever heard live, and sometimes I could hear him and the guys just warming up and jamming and I thought it was so cool. He also seemed kind and patient.
