La Bella Flatwound Setup on J Bass

Hi everyone, I have a set of .109s (telephone lines :)) la Bella flats on a classic series ‘60s jazz bass. Awhile back I had a tech do a set up for me with these strings and I guess the flats intimidated him as he had never put them on a bass before. He called me at one point scared about the...

    NBD! 62 Reissue P!

Just came in today. Scored this off of reverb. 2006-2007 CIJ PB62. I threw it on the bench and put CTS pots, switchcraft jack, orange cap, shielded everything, Fender Vintage bridge, tort guard, and tug bar. Came with Fender Flats, but I restrung it with TI’s. Can’t wait to gig her this weekend.

    Flats - Do I need to man-up?

Bit of background - I play in a Country Rock band, a 60s band, and a Blues Rock band. All fairly traditional stuff, with not an ounce of slapping in sight, fingerstyle (and palm mute) only..! I normally play a Fender Jazz with old D'Addario nickel rounds on it (45-105), either both pickups or...

Kubicki and La Bella Flats - Scale Length Issue

I recently re-strung my '92 Kubicki with La Bella Deep Talkin' Flats with .45-.105's in Standard/Long Scale length. The advertised scale length (at JustStrings) is 37 inches, however, per La Bella, the Long Scale E string is actually 36.75 inches. What difference does a 1/4-inch make? I'm glad...

TI Jazz Flats and punk with a pick..

Hey guys. I've got creaky hand issues and want to go low tension to help ease things. I like the idea of the TIs and the need never to change them, but how do they fare played pick style with drive and other effects? Anyone got any experience or sound samples of them being used for...

TI Jazz Flats SLAP TONE on Ash + Maple Jazz Bass

I have an Atelier Z Beta 4 JB-style instrument, ash body + maple on maple fingerboard. It also has 3-band eq which is quite powerful. Currently strung with half-dud XL`s. My 1st set of flats, ever.... aka Why didn't I do this sooner?

Got my first set of flats, ever, today, but first a little background on what I have been using. I started learning to play bass around age 11, way back in 1977. All I have ever used on a regular basis has been Ernie Ball Slinky (nickel wound) sets with a set of GHS Boomers thrown in there a...

Rickenbacker 4003s - New Band - Flats Or Rounds?

Had my 4003S set up a few months ago, but recut, etc., and been using D'addario NYXL 45-100 since. I'm pretty much a pick player. Recently joined a new band - one set 80s pop (Thompson Twins and so on), one set 80s funk/disco (Narada Michael Walden and so on). Found the current strings a bit...

Late 70s disco sound w/ flats

Looking for some opinions on which sets of flatwounds to choose. I'm throwing them onto a 2 band eq Stingray, and trying to emulate that mid-rangey late 70s disco bass sound. To be more specific I'm not looking for the James Jamerson thump, but something a bit more punchy, less thuddy, and...

    Hard Rock vs. Flats

Background: My main player is a Fender AVRI '63 P-bass that I've kept rounds on since I got it 4-5 years ago. In fact, I've used rounds about 95% of the time since I started playing 25+ years ago. I generally play all sorts of genres at home, but mainly Hard Rock (eg. Foo Fighters, Tool, etc.)...

Can anyone tell what’s wrong with the E string?

Hey guys, This is a relatively new (that’s what I was told) set of Labella medium flats (0.49 G string) that came with bass I just bought... Are ther 2 kinds of TI Jazz Flats?

So, earlier this month I picked up a set of JF324's for my new (to me) Mustang and absolutely loved the tone and tension. I think I paid around 70 bucks or so shipped. I liked them so much I decided to get some for my P which is currently wearing Chromes. A google search took me to Amazon where...

Has anyone tried the heavier gauges of Pyramid flats?

As I remember it, the Pyramid flats were only available in one gauge for the short scale and one for long scale. Both were pretty light. Now, for long scale, I see a 45-105 set and a 50-110 set that I didn't know existed. Has anyone tried these? Can you comment on the differences compared to the...

    Setup of flats

Do you set the action, so you get string buzz when digging in hard, when using flats, or are you happy this type of strings usually delivers little to no buzz/clank?

Just what I thought: Rounds versus Flats on Fretless

This guy is far better than me, and he confirms what I thought. Playing finger style, flats and rounds sound nearly the same on fretless. Rounds, however, do sound far better slapped on fretless than flats.

    String Noise Question (Fender Flats)

So today I took my bass to my local Guitar Center so the tech could file down the nut grooves a bit - there were some serious intonation issues on the first few frets. That problem seems to be fixed, but now my A string makes this weird buzzy, almost hollow noise when I play it open. If I gently...

Hofner Ignition Violin Bass- string length? (And La Bella Breakage?)

Hi everyone, I'm a bit confused as to what strings would be appropriate for a Hofner Ignition Violin Bass, length/scale wise. BEAD or 5 string?

I've spent most if my bass hours on 5ers, though my formative years (11-19) were on a 4 string. I have "come home" recently to four strings and I love it. The sleekness and simplicity of one less string to mute has been enjoyable to say the least, but I miss my low notes. The BEAD offers the...

    Switched To Flats - Buzz on D & G from 7th to 16th

I have a brand new Custom Shop fretted P bass, which was playing very well with the stock strings (Fender 7250 .45-105). I prefer the sound of flats on a precision so I ordered a pair of Labella 760FL (43-104). The new strings play and feel great with a light touch all across the neck...

    Recommended flatwounds?

Hi guys. Looking to buy some flatwounds for the first time. Generally stick with medium-gauge roundwounds but looking to try something else. Don't have a huge budget and looking for flats to suit 50s/60s/70s soul, jazz, blues etc.. Any recommendations would be great, thanks in advance.

Mustang and P Bass Question (Flats or Rounds on which?)

So I have had a PBass for a while that I've always strung with rounds and am about to pull the trigger on an old Mustang Bass. I'd like to have one guitar with flats and the other with rounds but am not sure which to do what with. The classic PBass flat sound is great, but I know a lot of...
