A longtime friend of mine recently told me that, Patchouli, of all oils, is an excellent fretboard conditioner. Now I love the smell of the stuff, and it makes my skin mighty soft but, on a fretboard?
Does anyone know if this is accurate?
I got my stingray special not even two months ago, I don't know if this crack has been there since I got it but I only noticed it today. I thought I had inspected it fully but I guess I missed this.
As you can see the crack is coming up from the wheel, going left a bit until it reaches the top...
Okay more specifically... Not block inlays but the ones that just go all the way across the fret. Like a shallow dado (not totally set on ebony but considering it - I'd like to use wood as opposed to plastic composites or whatever). I'm just wondering if the difference in the densities of the...
I have an MTD 535-24 with wenge fingerboard for 8 years. At various frets, where the fret meets the fingerboard, there is a whitish substance that developed on the fingerboard over time (see attached pic). I can remove it using a soft metal brush, but it will return in about a week or two's...
I have a P with flats (which is extremely unusual and I'm the only bass player on TB that plays one of those). ;) Anyways, I love my Labellas but for some reason, my fingers don't slide on them the way they do on rounds. You would think they would glide effortlessly cuz there's less friction...
I'm thinking of using masking tape to cover the entire square behind each fret (only those already with inlays).
Or, in other words, wherever an inlay is, I cover the full area with masking tape.
Will this cause any issues with the wood?
Let me preface this by saying that this is only a good idea on rosewood, pau ferro or unfinished maple boards. As brought out in the video, it will crack polyester, polyurethane or lacquer finishes. I wish I thought of this easy hack years ago. Have already done it on 2 rosewood fretboards with...
A few weeks ago, I was watching Gary Willis' video that he did with Scott Devine at Scott's Bass Lessons, and one of the things he showed, when discussing his technique is, when soloing, the importance of shifting hand positions on the neck, horizontally. I think he mentioned something about...
Seriously ponder buying a Harley Benton Harley Benton JB-40FL, fretless jazz bass, as I want to be able to cope that classic fretless tone and those sweet seamless slides and vibratos.
I generally prefer to play short scale basses, and my main is a 5 string 28,6" scale Ibanez Mikro bass, but...
Hey all! Doing a fretless conversion on an older Roadstar II and thought it might look nice with oval inlays like some of the higher-end SR series. Would anyone have advice on sizing / sources? There’s a few people selling sets on eBay but thought I’d ask before diving in. Thanks!
Hey! So I’m defretting one of my basses. I’m not sure exactly as to what type of finish I should use. I’ve seen some people use marine epoxy (like jaco) Some used polyurethane, and I’ve even seen some people use superglue. I have no idea which one to use, I want something that feels like natural...
Not sure if this post belongs in Lutherie or Setup and Repair, but here goes:
I have couple '80s Peavey basses that need some fretboard work, particularly my fretless Foundation. The Owner's Manual lists the radius as 8" and of course the only radius blocks I can find are for You-Know-Who's...
This is just something I'm curious about. I don't have any instruments with a laurel fretboard - visually I prefer darker rosewood or even ebony. But, since plenty of basses have been sold since the changeover from rosewood to laurel, I wondered how those who have the laurel are liking it, and...

Rick Beardly is building a bass for me. It's an 8 string so he had a tough time finding a wide enough piece of ebony. We went with African blackwood. Now that he has sanded and oiled it I can't believe how beautiful it is. Have a look!
I've owned this Jazz neck for a while, and only lately have noticed how deep the grooves of the grain are. Compared to other necks, the grain on this fretboard looks and feels loose and open.
Does anyone have an explanation for this? Does it look like the fretboard been damaged...
So I am a lead player, I play chords, solos and high register stuff. I have an old fretless that I think could help bring that extra complexity to my playing.
But I've heard that the tone is quite dull on flatwounds, and I surmise I'd have to jump a bunch of hoops with rounds if I want an...
Bought this yamaha bx1 for 150.00
Some goon ripped the frets out of it.
I dont know much about refretting and repair and some people on facebook said it could be too torn up to refret. My ignorant opinion is that it looked like a clean job when I got it, and I love this bass enough that its...
USA NS-5XL custom built in 2013. Anyone familiar with Spector's ultraviolet finish knows this finish is like a chameleon under different lighting conditions. This one has a unique quilting in the maple I have not seen in other US Spectors.
This bass spec'd to sound just like a Spector NS-2 but...

I may not have the terminology correct (so please refrain from igniting your flamethrowers)... but I'm curious if you folks could explain "hanger frets" or the approach some builders take when extending the fretboard past the neck block. Why wouldn't you just extend the neck block a little...
Hi Guys
I am defretting a Harley Benton Bass neck to try my first forays into playing fretless. The fingerboard is 'Roseacer' and we are filling the fret slots with 'filler' rather than veneer etc.
My question is can I use a finishing oil (several coats) rather than applying an epoxy if I am...
I have heard that little WD-40 on cloth will do the jobb.
But i think it's little gamble to hard.
I've been told that weapon-oil may be better and mild Ballistol seems safer.
I just want to know what people here think?
Hi everyone, new user and never posted in a forum before so I hope I'm putting this question in the right place .
I have a Squier jazz bass which has an indian laurel fret board, what is the best way to clean and condition it? Is lemon oil ok or?
Thanks in advance.
Hello, everybody.
I'm concidering buying a G&L tribute L2500 from an overseas seller on ebay.
G&L Tribute L-2500 Electric Bass Guitar 5 string + HARD CASE! | eBay
I am however a little weary as I'm not sure what kind of Wood this fretboard has.
The current Tributes are made with Brazillian...
my Squier mb-4's strings are hitting my fretboard it did that a long ago but i got it fix but i removed the string to clean the fretboard but when i but them back it still does it cans you help me please?
EDIT: I'm concered about the *Fretboard* not the neck itself.
I've got a somewhat rare configuration of the Brice HXB 405 (rondo music brand) and it's got an unfinished maple neck. Yes, I'm positive there's no finish.
Damn thing gets full of finger gunk fast. I'm afraid to use any sort of...
Just got my 69 jazz out of storage and the board was all sorts of sad and dry. Gave it a couple treatments with fret doctor and it's bounced back nicely. Photos made me happy so wanted to share

Hi,
I am finally getting round to mastering scales and improvisation. Is it vital for me to remember all notes of scale I'm using and of my fretboard to reach maximum efficiency in the long run? note: I know the fret notes near the head allready
Do most well known bassists do this? I am mostly...
