Ahead Of, On, Behind The Beat

Wild guess: If you are grabbing text from someone to post here, paste it into notepad on a pc (or Mac equivalent text editor with no formatting). Then select it and recopy to the clipboard. Then paste it here.

Great Idea, i may just put all my info and material in to word and format it all to one size, post a few in to a thread and get the correct font size.
Maybe even do my posts in this manner and cut and paste into threads as well, rather than use the Talk Bass editor, cheers for the idea.

I for one don't like some playing ahead, behind and on. This to me is sloppy. I would think you would want to be tight. As a drummer, I have practiced with a Russian Dragon and I had to actually think of playing on top of the beat to be right on. ( The settings can go down to insanely accurate.) We've all heard of being a good pocket player, and even playing on top or behind can lead to a feel, but I would never want to try and do this on purpose for me or other members. We would simply perhaps slow the tempo down to achieve the desired result. But that's just me. Perhaps the examples of playing behind the beat were "normal" for that musician on a certain recording session. When other band members played with the Russian Dragon, almost if not all were behind the beat on the finest settings.

Cool post but not all music uses a drummer......music can have a tempo, rhythm and feel without any drum beat, the beat is created by the feel.
I think in the bass world, to much emphisis is put on bass and drums being locked in, as the Police stories suggest playing around the beat is a technique that is an effect, and maybe is used to help promote dancing as well as listening?

Cool. Someday I'll share something musical that you tap like on but for now I'll be happy with this. Lot to learn.

I didn't read any of the thread, just the original post.

The whole idea of playing behind, ahead, anywhere with the beat is that the underlying pulse stays where it is. If everyone goes there, the FEEL might change which probably is not what you want.

Stop counting and thinking, it's the feel that determines the beat.
