Bon Jovi were at the height of their fame (with Slippery when wet) when I got married in 1987. Only a month after our wedding we saw them Headline the Monsters of Rock at Castle Donnington in England. Fantastic show and they were received really well considering the rest of the lineup that day consisted of Metallica, Cinderella, Dio, Wasp and Anthrax. Alec's bass was really prominent on the night as he drove all the hits along. Without his basslines on Slippery, I don't think Bon Jovi would have been so big - certainly not over here.

A little off topic. But since Alec wasn't "good enough" to play on the recordings & was booted for being less than stellar, does that mean Jon boy should be fired for his crappy singing as of late?

Hugh is a great bassist, but Alec did play that stuff live on all those shows.

I've heard that Jon boy can't sing anymore. If true, then yes, he needs to quit, because he's stealing money from his fans.

Saw Bon Jovi in 1986-87 at the top of their fame, with Cinderella opening. Good show for both bands.

No because Jon is the CEO/band leader. People are willing to shell out big bucks to see Bon Jovi so unless there’s some sort of boycott/backlash against the guy, he’s gonna keep working.

Unfortunately for Alec, a studio musician was brought in to play most of the bass lines on the recordings. Pretty much all of the hit songs are played by Hugh Mcdonald

I only heard of this recently. I guess there be could difference between having a suitable style for recording and one for live.

I saw him live in '84 as the opening band for the Scorpions. I couldn't get past his brown cigarettes while playing. It distracted me from his playing ability. I think he was a solid player and respect his achievements.

I met him around 2000 in Palm Harbor Florida. At least that's what my friend said. We were having coffee at a bookstore when this guy came up and started talking with my friend. Friend had been in the business for some years and was in recovery for drugs and alcohol. Alec was talking of living near the beach and had just gotten a new amp. Said he was working for H&R Block as a call backer selling credit protection or something. I thought it strange that someone with his background would be in that situation. After he left my buddy apologized for not introducing me but admitted he couldn't remember his name. If it was him, he seemed like a very nice guy.

Condolences to those that knew him.

I was pointing out how Bon Jovi can no longer sing. This was in Austin 2 months ago. Maybe he should fire himself.
right, but that's got nothing to do with the passing of Alec John Such (which is what this whole thread is supposed to be about).

Alec John Such, Former Bon Jovi Bassist, R.I.P.

Bon Jovi's bassist Alec John Such died at 70. The tragic news surrounding the founding member of the rock group made headlines after his death was announced on Twitter by frontman Jon Bon Jovi on June 5. As of this writing, the cause of his death still remains unknown.

"We are heartbroken to hear the news of the passing of our dear friend Alec John Such," the "It's My Life" hitmaker wrote in a statement. "He was an original. As a founding member of Bon Jovi, Alec was integral to the formation of the band. To be honest, we found our way to each other thru him — He was a childhood friend of Tico [Torres] and brought Richie [Sambora] to see us perform. Alec was always wild and full of life. Today these special memories bring a smile to my face and a tear to my eye. We will miss him dearly."

Before hitting it big with Bon Jovi in the 1980s, Such performed in a band called Message, according to AP News. In 1983, Bon Jovi formed and became one of the most influential rock bands of all-time. Such left the group in 1994, but he did make one-off appearances with Bon Jovi in 2001 and 2008.
