I was wondering if anyone makes humbucker J pickups, and not just hum canceling split coils, a bit like the humbucker guitar strat pickups using two blades in a single coil enclosure?

Edit!!: Since there seem to be some confusion about what I mean with true humbuckers: By true humbuckers I actually mean traditional humbuckers, as in pickups that uses two coils run in serial connection under two parallel rows of polepieces or rails.

Thank you a lot.

My first impression, though I don't have much to base it on, makes me gravitate towards the Reverend one.

Maybe even go all the way and get both a humbucker J and P pickup for my P/J bass, which currently is equipped with a set of EMG Geezer Butler pickups.

Actually I am quite satisfied with the Geezer pickups, still I guess there is always the drive to search for an even better tone, which of course always will be a matter of personal preference.

Guess I am looking for a fuller tone with a bit more of a piano like definition and clarity to it.

Not that I am any expert on pickups, but from my little experience and what I read it seems like humbuckers with ceramic magnets, which the Reverends are, might be able to get me closer to what I am going for.

Please do correct me if I am wrong in that assumption.

I got nutn. Jist swung by to say Welcome to TalkBass @TuneSalad666 !!!!!!

Thank you :)

I don't know about using the word "true" in true humbucker to refer to one kind of humbucking pickup. Split coil and stack coil designs are "true" humbuckers in that they truly do buck the 60 cycle hum.

Dual-coil J pickups are a tall order to fit inside a narrow J pickup casing. There were some from SGD, but I wouldn't recommend trying to buy those new now given the issues with the proprietor. Keeping an eye open for a used set might be good though.

It's unclear if this fits ther bill (probably stacked coil). However, in my experience, Bill Lawrence's Wilde Pickups are a stunning bargain.

"The J-45 set offers Bill's multi-pole piece system for 4 string, 5 and some narrow 6 string Jazz Bass instruments. His airgap noisefree design for the jazz bass replacement comes standard with pole pieces at a slight stagger to accommodate most neck radius. Flush pole pieces are available per request which may require additional wait time."

Since you seem to fail to understand what I mean unless I use 100% correct technical terms (even if I did specify in the first post of this thread that dual split coil hum canceling pickups doesn't qualify as what I call a true humbucker pickup):

By true humbuckers I actually mean traditional humbuckers, as in pickups that uses two coils run in serial connection under two parallel rows of polepieces or rails.

I understood you perfectly and made a suggestion of a pickup model that's in line with your request. :D

man i miss those sweet scns that came with my jb :(

When pickup manufacturers design a pickup to fit in a Jazz Bass housing (hum canceling or otherwise), I believe they’re still trying to stay in the traditional Jazz Bass “ballpark” tone wise, as that’s what the market demands. Also, a pickup with the physical dimensions of a Jazz Bass pickup will have Jazz Bass tone “baked-in”.

If you really want a “traditional” humbucker with side-by-side coils, I think you going to have to get the router out, and abandon the Jazz Bass pickup idea.

Sounds to me as if you really need a different bass. One that has larger humbuckers already in place, or at least big soapbars that can be replaced with big phat humbuckers. Ibanz SRX 700/705 are a solid choice. Neck-through on the 700s, and lower models are bolt-on if you prefer that but have different pickups. Fast necks, good fretwork. Stock SRX 700/705 pickups are very piano like.
They are discontinued and you can find used ones for dirt cheap all over the world.
