Bag End Club.

hey guys -- I'm looking at a pair of 15" Bag Ends, here locally (one with tweeter, one without, S15D, and S15XD). They seem like a great portable alternative to me. Researching on the internet, just very little chatter about this line. Where's the love? Should I just a 2x15 or 2x12 in some other line like Epifani or something? Sell me on these Bag Ends, ok?

Plenty of love, plenty of chatter... No need to sell you on these Bag Ends... play them (in a band setting preferred) and they will sell themselves. :bassist:

Here's my stack, exactly like the one you're looking at, set up for our NYE gig. It sounded great, is easy to carry in my small car, and can carry a small to medium sized room (in this case, about 120 person capacity) without PA support.

I don't think you can screw up with the Bag Ends. Super-nice tone, very punchy, can bring the grit, nice broad bandwidth of representation. They will "bring the lows", but not like a strong sub. Nonetheless they are convincing. If you need more than you probably need PA support. The S15-Ds I have (2) are all I presently need, and sound pretty near perfect. I'm going for an old-school sound with a Trace-Elliot 250SMX on top, a Micro Q-Tron fed by the amp's send/return. Playing a FrankenSquier with an old Duncan p'up and TI Flats, and a Peavey Dyna-Bass Unity strung B-E-A-D with D'Addario Nickel-Wounds. I'm playing reggae, poseur-jazz, surf, greasy funk and Portuguese traditional with this very phat little rig; the sound is big and authorative. Nice voice for my bass. Get the singles- they're easy to carry and you can do a coffee-shop gig with just one cab. Be ready for anything to come up... I find it's convenient and a good selling point if I can easily go from tiny to massive venues. "Call Rog- he can do it!", they say... :bassist: :D

Just speaking from my experience; both my BE's were on sale locally, both used for stage gigs (the 18 was in a real Pro band) for years. They look almost new, quite heavy to lug around (only drawback for me), but built very solidly, and sound excellent.

If I find a set of 15's locally for a good price (and in great shape) I will buy a pair.

Hey, maybe somebody can recommend an ideal amp to drive my Bag End subs...

I have two Bag End S18E subs, which I use in my electronics setup (note -- it's not used for bass guitar, electronics only, including lots of ultra low rumbling synth tones). I also have the ELF-M2 processor. (The mids/highs go through a Bill Fitzmaurice Omni cab). I'm currently driving everything with a Carvin HD1800 amp, which needs to be replaced... because the clip-warning lights on the Carvin are coming on before I can get as loud as I want to be (the warning lights on the ELF hardly ever flash). To be specific, the warning lights on the Carvin channel that is driving the subs is lighting up.

What would be a good amp to dedicate to driving these subs (400 watts each, 8 ohms)? Obviously, the goal is to get maximum low end performance while minimizing the risk of blowing a driver. If I'm using the ELF processor, might I still possibly want a limiter in my rack? Anything I can do to maximize safety? I want to push these subs hard, but also push them safely.

The S-18E cabs are 400 watts each, 8 ohms. The Carvin amp I have puts out 600 watts at 4 ohms per side (I drive both subs with one side of the Carvin amp. The Bill F. cab gets the other channel of the Carvin amp for mids/highs). I'd like to dedicate an amp to driving the subs only -- that seems to be necessary -- and another amp to driving the mids/highs. I'll thinking I should use the Carvin amp on the Bill F. cab, as the Carvin puts out 350 watts per side at 8 ohms (and the Bag Ends say they are rated for 400). Seems like I definitely need an additional amp, no matter what, and it's just a matter of which one (and for what purpose.)

Recommendations?

Also, if anyone has experience with the ELF processors, please let me know... I'm wondering if there is a best way to dial it in. The ELF guide is full of general technical info about subwoofers but has no actual directions on how to set the controls. I currently have Concealment on the sub frequencies about 75% of max, as that seems to be the way to keep the ELF warning light from coming on frequently.

Thanks!

I would suggest a Crown XTi2000 dual channel power amp:

http://www.crownaudio.com/amp_htm/xti.htm

At 8 ohms it puts out 475 watts per channel, and can do 2, 4 and 8 ohms so you could effectively daisy chain several 18's.

Or if the Crown is too expensive, take a look at the Carvin DCM1540L:

http://www.carvinguitars.com/products/single.php?product=DCM1540L

It's cheaper and as light (around 15lbs) and handles 425 watts at 8 ohms (but only does 4/8 ohms, not 2).

Others have mentioned that they've put double the wattage into their BE cabs for gigs, and they keep working fine, so the 2 amps I suggest, with their over 400 watts rating, shouldn’t hurt the BE cabs. I have no experience with the ELF processor.

I still look back fondly on the early / mid 90s and playing both indoor showcase and outdoor festival type gigs... watching the other bassists giggle at my AMP + S12 + S15 micro stack while I set up turn to confused stares during my quick sound check and then to dropped jaws during my band's set when my 'funny little practice amp' totally owned their 4x10 + 1x18 or 8x10 high powered monster rig in tone, clarity AND usable volume :smug: :bassist: :D

I know of at least 3 guys that caught me live back in the 90s that bought and still own Bag End stuff.

heck yeah! i have ticked off many a fridge carrying snob with just that setup.
