Boss GT-1000 Core noise issue

It doesn’t sound faulty though, I’m pretty sure a replacement would do the same. It doesnt automatically connect the ground of your audio signal as that would introduce a ground loop if using an amp, so instead you need to connect the ground to something else. This can be common in other devices that can be used with headphones, like the Strymon Iridium (they have a FAQ entry about it)
Yup,

"Noise Performance

Iridium was designed as a an amp modeler solution in a pedal format that you can drop into any pedalboard. Like most other guitar pedals, it receives its ground connection via the 1/4″ output jacks. When listening to Iridium through the headphone output and using a wall adapter, there is no connection earth ground like there is with an amplifier. This causes some noise (hum) and is usually reduced when you ground the guitar by touching the strings. The adapter that is included with Iridium significantly reduces this hum when compared to similar parts. If an amplifier with an earth ground connection is available, then, the hum can be eliminated by connecting the LEFT or RIGHT OUT from Iridium to the input of the amplifier. The amplifier doesn’t need to be powered on for the ground to be provided. Power supplies like the Zuma and Ojai have much better filtering and isolation which will improve the noise performance"

I should add that you can assess if its a USB ground issue if you are running a laptop by using the Laptop on battery and disconnected. If this resolves the problem, your only solution is to investigate some “galvanic isolation” USB boxes.

Sadly, digital audio and circuit induced noise is always a challenge for designers. Clean power design is one of the reasons we pay so much for “great sounding” gear like the Avalon and Grace devices.

In the end I had a suck it up and not use the HX connected to a computer, and learn to love the sounds. It was this that made me sell, and buy the GT1k. They are different styles of sounds, and for me, the way the Boss works ( and the wonderful UI and indented pots ) make the experience of using the GT a joy.

For those who insist on the fact that it’s the way things work, do you really believe the behavior I mentioned earlier is normal? Ie when I use the ground lift, there’s about a quarter second of latency introduced, the volume drops by half and the instrument sounds distant, like a wet reverb?

Trade is not sacred, you got a dud, no guilt at all?

I just tried lifting the ground - huge noise - not good. I didn’t even know that that pref page was there as the unit has been flawless. I am a mix engineer by day and the quality of audio AD/DA stages and onboard dsp are wonderful - no complaints here. I sold a bunch of pedals when I settled on the GT as its so robust and musical from my perspective.

It really sounds like you have an issue - can you visit your dealer and resolve the issue?

Fair enough, I hope the you return your other pedal and they cancel your refund, send it back to you, no guilt at all.

It just seems fair to me.

We obviously don’t live in the same part of the world. The local online platform (Craigslist equivalent) lets you cancel a trade anytime in case poopie happens. They hold the money and refund the buyer. Professional sellers have different obligations and there’s a really good buyer protection in Europe, even more for online stores.
Your comparison doesn’t make sense anyway.

I get it, you’re upset because we don’t play by the same rules but I don’t care at all and it doesn’t bring anything to the issue I reported.

I bought it on Amazon and contacted the seller. There is no alternative but sending it back for a refund per Amazon policy.

And yet you expect others to play by the rules when it suits you? You are amazingly self entitled.
I hope you have no end of trouble trying to return the pedal. You deserve it.

I don't know what's going on here. The only thing in common between the two trades is that the goods are from the same family.

FYI I won't have any trouble returning it. I contacted the seller even if I didn't have to, I could have just filled in the retractation form with absolutely ZERO motivation. I'll get a refund by Amazon, end of story. That's the way things work here no matter what you think about it.

Thats a bugger.. At least Amazon should honour this.

Can we clarify that you are getting the noise when you have no USB cable connected?

I only tested it on headphones, not connected to USB. The pedal is already packaged and ready to ship so I can't say.

This is out of line. Sellers from all platforms are able to cancel the orders after being placed. As long as the full amount is promptly returned to the buyer, there is no issue here. Things happen. Having the buyer return the product is just another form of having the transaction cancelled and money refunded, just like the seller cancelling.

It sounds like the issue you had with the HX was a ground loop from too many grounds, while OP’s issue is most likely no ground at all. Connecting to a computer over usb might actually reduce the noise for him, but is not a convenient solution.

Actually, doing that after accepting the purchase would constitute breach of contract, as is made VERY clear in the ebay terms and conditions. Even on other platforms the buyer would have legal recourse if they wanted to, and "my other pedal doesn't work properly so I don't want to sell it any more" would not be a winning argument in a court case.
Either way, do as you please, I can't control you and it's not worth the hassle so no one is going to bother with a court case.

eBay is not involved here. It’s the local Craigslist equivalent (#1 website in the country) which lets the seller cancel up to the very last step of the transaction, with a single click and no question asked.

@crazyBassClown Despite your worst wishes against me, everything went smoothly. I got a refund for the defective GT1000 and the HX Stomp buyer was delivered its device and rated me 5 stars for my responsiveness. If he only knew what an evil seller I am...
