Broughton Audio Super Thread

My problem is I've sold bass stuff and added drum stuff to the stable 😂
That’s not too bad,
Along with all the bass gear I’ve also been collecting:
guitar gear (5 amps, 10 guitars, lotsa pedals), plus live sound equipment, lots of high end recording equipment, and i have 3 vehicles that I’ve done a lot of custom work to, and a smallish collection of firearms.
So I’d say you’re doing pretty good with just bass and drum gear!

The nice thing about clearing out some stuff that isn’t getting used is that it makes space for a few new things to land.
You know that rule with clothes, if you haven’t worn it in a year you don’t need it? Just apply that to the gear.
I’ll admit I still have some pedals that haven’t been used in a while that are not going on the chopping block just to keep around for either sentimental reasons or because I feel they’d be useful for recording purposes.
But once you get in the groove taking the pictures and writing the ads can be fun too.
Thanks, pal!

All things Canadian look to get more expensive in January. Won't say more than that, but definitely buy when in stock right meow.
I have a lot more to say about that if it actually comes to pass. The Canadian economy will essentially be crushed by its best friend, neighbor, trading partner, ally with which it shares a 5525 mile border with.
We are not amused. Good luck with the fallout from that.

3rd Helion... hopefully this time it will learn to stay.

I'd like to think that rational people will intervene, but it appears the new administration is designed to avoid that if at all possible.

Canada/US is the world's largest relationship (approaching $1T annually), and the US trade deficit isn't that large (only $53B in 2022 - compared to $367B deficit with China). So hopefully cooler heads prevail.

Truly a head scratching development. A “Hold my beer” moment of sorts, if you will. I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for it to happen, though.

I'm fairly certain our thoughts are very similar on this matter.

And sorry everyone, don't want the thread locked for pruning/wammies.

Well, as most of us Canucks can attest to, all things priced USD have slaughtered our pocket books tremendously. It sucks enough that the CAD has depreciated dramatically over the last month or so, but news of the tariffs has dropped our dollar even more. I refuse to pay USD for anything now. Not worth the fx rates and commission. Which sucks cuz there are some pretty decent Black Friday deals to be had. Just not for us. 🙁
I told the big compressor thread, but never told youse guys.
Broughton Omnicomp was my winner over the following pretty durn good selection. I chose these as representatives of different technologies for the compression:

Empress
Becos Stella
Tranzformer
Lusithand Alma MkII
Doc Lloyd DLA-2A

I'll tell you why I prefer Omnicomp over second place Empress.
In compressor threads, I think sometimes "transparent" means "very subtle transition between uncompressed and compressed", but a stricter definition is "sounds like my bass straight through, and also very subtle transition to compressed". I think Omnicomp better satisfies the latter, while to me Empress adds a little sweetness that I don't necessarily want.

Quiet operation was an essential priority.

(As a compressor, I also chose Omnicomp ("for cleaner lows") over Effectrode LA-1A , but the latter is a keeper for other reasons.)
It has always bugged me that the Omnicomp doesn't get more respect in the compressor thread. I get the feeling that it's a principled move of the thread mods. After owning, then selling, my first OC, I cycled through a few others just to find my way back to the OC. It's solid, versatile, and quiet. I'm not letting this go again. It does whatever I will it to.
I like my PC-2A from Effectrode but I have been thinking of trying something more "transparent" I've loved everything Broughton I've tried so maybe should give the Omni a try.
I enjoyed my time with the PC-2A, but the Omnicomp is leaps and bounds better. I found that he PC-2A, while being a great comp, had a very narrow range of effective control over my bass.

Just got my FFXL a few days ago and need your help, Broughs. I glossed over the part of the product description mentioning the HPF being PRE-loop and it's thrown ME for a loop.

I was expecting (incorrectly, and totally my fault for not reading) that the HPF would be after the loop, before the final gain stage. HPF before loop really changes the sound of the drives I put in it. For example, my beloved Barbershop seems kind of neutered without low end, as did my Terraformer. I tried to emulate the opposite option and put a HPF+LPF last in the loop to chop off the LF content after the drives, which made the drives sound better but also kind of defeated the whole point of the FFXL thing I guess.

For the FFXL users here: where do you set the loop's HPF? Are the settings your drives differently in the FFXL loop than they'd be if you were running them inline?

I wish the FFXL had pre and post filter options. HPF pre filter messed with my octaves. Those filters got so specific per pedal in loop, I had multiple filters, the settings differed so much. Unless you're light on the filtering, it's hard to slam an entire line of effects in the loop, imho
