"Check In" here before and after your gigs, set 3 - everyone's drunk now!

Had the opportunity to open for the 90’s country band Blackhawk last night.

We played this venue about five years ago. Just a single song did an awards show so it was good to be back for a full set. It’s an old throwback dancehall, with low ceilings and a low stage so they sit everyone at tables so you can see the band.

I just ran direct so my only gear was my bass and my board.

The venue recently renovated and added a much larger green room for the main acts so we got to hang out in the old one right behind the stage. We’re still seeing how this works as a five member band. (It was seven when I joined six years ago).

I had the pleasure of meeting their bassist, Randy, before the show. The entire band was really great. Very humble and welcoming.

And he let me set my iPad on his cab for the show.

We played a 75 minute set which flew by.

Quick tear off/load out and I hung around backstage for a bit to take in Blackhawk’s set. So good and really amazing harmonies. Great band all around. They really got the crowd partying.

I then went out and joined my wife and a number of her friends who made a night of it.

That looks like a cracking night! I love it when we occasionally get to be the local opening band for somebody on tour - proper sound man, lights, food and drink (🤞) our usual audience + theirs, and when we've finished we can watch the headliners! 😁 Rare, but much enjoyed. Some great photos there. 👍

It’s nice to feel special every now and again!

Had a couple of fun ones this weekend. Friday night at a new bar for us in south Austin and then Saturday afternoon for another bar having its anniversary blowout. Several bands on the ticket for that one. Used my new Sadowsky and everything sounded on point.

Definitely a fun weekend. Next weekend I have a regular band gig Friday night and then have a sub gig on Saturday. Should be another good time!

Last gig of the year for Planets. Playing through a GK 410 combo or something from the legendary Central Saloon in Seattle. I will bring my pedalboard and just use the amp for stage monitoring and likely have engineer run DI from the Tone Hammer DI.

I've been having difficulty coming to terms with bedroom/basement tone vs rehearsal/performance tone. Maybe it's the IEMS from my YR band? I don't know.

No earplugs at home, running my TE > 212 Avatar and of course it fundamentally sounds different from my Orange TB > 210 >115 stack with full band and earplugs. I spent half of rehearsal tweaking amp settings and such before I just said f/it and went with it. Listening back to recording, it sounded ok. Played my Player P.

Just now, running this board into my efx return on my TE, by passing the preamp and EQ, the P sounds so mids heavy and aggressive, almost too much. I tried my gold L1k and it's fuller sounding, for sure. I have adjusted my THDI, with AGS on, and achieved unity with my Spark Boost to Clean, with AGS off (if that makes sense). AGS off/SB on give me a pretty clean sound, for our less aggressive songs. Then I can kick off the SB and AGS back on, for a really overdriven tone. I will try that tonight.

I just tried with the 84 HOG L1k and that sounds even less aggro with flats. I may go that option tonight.

If you're in Seattle, come on down, we go on at 8!

Had a couple of shows again this past weekend. Gig 1 was with my regular crew, The Michael Ingalls Band. We played a new venue for us on their outdoor stage. Unfortunately we hit a chilly spell (for central TX anyhow) and played in upper 40/low 50 temps with a slight breeze. A few folks braved it at the beginning as it was still just warm enough from the day but as soon as the sun was fully gone forget about it! We had a few folks hanging around the one fire out they had but they was about it. They have rolling garage doors for the main venue for those inside to be able to listen but they even slammed those shut during our first break as the patrons inside were complaining about the cold. Oh well…what can you do.

On Saturday I played for a guy named Trey Gilleland who I played for back in the spring out in Bertram, TX. At one point he used to be out on the road a little bit but now he owns a nice RV Park (among some other businesses) and hosts events there a couple times a year for friends and RV campers. We have some good Austin musician networking groups on social media and that’s how we met up. A couple of the guys with us were the drummer and steel guitar player from the Josh Ward band. If you don’t know who he is, he’s a local Texas guy and has some good songs out there if you’re into country. We had a good time and everything went smoothly for having a 2 hour rehearsal a couple of days prior and throwing a handful of songs into the set we didn’t rehearse.

Once again, more Genzler/Sadowsky love.

That’s it for now. No gigs over the next couple of weekends but I think we have 3 on the books in December leading up to Christmas. Have fun out there y’all.
