Chris Cole Slant 212 Build Thread

Looks awesome! Any chance of sound clips?

Thanks!

I think so - I design and build basses and I have a couple that need to be demo’d. I wrote a script for one demo, and I’ll probably be using this new rig.

That being said, I still can’t figure out what the “Drive” knob does on the Aggie.

I have the tone hammer DI pedal running through a Broughton HPF LPF pedal into a Carvin BX 1500 bridged into my slant cab. I agree on the drive knob, it doesn't seem to do much when the agro circuit is bypassed.

I spent some time with the Aguilar yesterday, and I kind of started to figure it out. It seems to shape the way the gain emphasizes the distortion. I looked it up on the TH500 thread here in TB and it sort of confirmed my findings. I guess the more you turn the Drive up, it starts to roll off the lows and highs. It’s pretty cool, actually. For right now, I have them both at around 10:30-11:00. Any more than that, the amp gets that real overdriven sound.

Haha - I have the Broughton HPF, too! I haven’t put it in this new rig yet. I’m just plugged straight in for the time being.

Here it is...

At first, I thought it was too big for my living room. It’s taller than my old MarkBass combo. However, the li’l lady said it’s much prettier than my old MarkBass combo, so it’s OK. I’m not really gigging these days on account of COVID.

I’ll probably start a “new amp day” thread.

Very nice!!! What is your take on the sound? I find myself turning the hf driver almost all the way down.

I’m still getting acquainted with both the amp and the cab. I’m pretty blown away by the depth it has. The low end is like, three dimensional.

I’ve never been a tweeter guy. They always blow, so I usually turn them off. That being said, I have the tweet on this turned up about halfway. The amp rounds the highs nicely. I play flatwounds, so I’m always for that low end. I’m digging on the sound right now - the rig sounds a lot more aggressive than my old MarkBass.

Regarding the Drive control on the TH500. Its effect is more noticeable in a live band setting than in a living room setting. To understand what it does, suggest setting the Gain very low, say nine o'clock or lower, and the Drive up around one or two o'clock. Keeping the gain well down will avoid overdrive and let you hear what the Drive is doing to the tone. The effect can really make the amp "pop" in a live band setting. That speaker looks awesome! How is the weight?

Thanks for the tips!

I sat down with the amp for a couple of hours last night and twiddled all the knobs to see what they do. Just like you said, keeping the gain down and working the master is really the way to go. The Aggie really is designed to behave like a tube amp! I’ll check out the Drive knob a little more today - I don’t know when I’ll be playing this rig in a live band setting!

The weight is not too bad - I’d say it’s in the mid-fifties. It feels roughly the same weight as my MarkBass combo - maybe a little heavier by a couple pounds. They offered some neodymium speakers at Speaker Hardware, but the ceramics sounded noticeably superior on the demos. Way more muscle and push.

I gotta be careful, though - my ears were ringing by the end of the night.

Congratulations for this very nice job Freekmagnet ! I have also built a Chris Cole's slant cab with schemas obtained from Speakerhardware. I initially mounted it only with the 2 Beymas, no tweeter. And it sounds amazing for my Classic Rock band !!! However, I have also another project that requiers some slappy bass (sparkling). To this end, I plan to add the BGH25 Tweeter + PXB2:5K0 crossover. However, I see that both are 8 ohms. My 2 Beymas are 8 ohms wired in parallel... Is it compatible ? Your Beymas speakers are 8 ohms too or 4 ohms wired in series ? Thanks for your help ;)

Sorry, but I’m definitely not the guy to come to for speaker and crossover guidance. I just built the stock kit with the components provided by Speaker Hardware. I don't know a lot about speakers and stuff.

The 12” drivers I have are 2x8Ω wired in parallel making this a 4Ω cabinet.

You can always email Leland Crooks at Speaker Hardware if you have questions. He usually gets back within a day or two.

Thank you for this fast answer ! If they are both in 8 ohms in parallel, you actually solve my problem! thank you very much.
PS. : I love the look of your bass guitar, too bad I'm too far away (France). Good continuation :)

This high pass crossover will work with your cab very well .

Home

The one on the speaker hardware site is a 2-way and needs an 8 ohm load on the woofers to work right . With this kind of cabinet you don't really need a 2-way anyway , a simple high pass will work just as well and it costs less . It is high enough that it won't change or effect the 4 ohm load of the woofers at all .

Thanks for the advice Bluesbass2! I already bought the PXB2:5K. Do you think it would be better to replace it with the PXB5K0 ? Actually, I don’t really understand the differences between these 2 Tweeters, i mean in terms of impedance.

The PXB2:5K is a two way crossover . It is for a woofer and a tweeter . The PXB5K0 is a high pass filter designed for just the tweeter . The PXB5K0 keeps the low end from the tweeter and lets the woofer go full range . The woofers don't go near that high so they don't need a filter to make it sound right .

The PXB2:5K uses the same high pass filter for the tweeter as the PXB5K0 but also uses a low pass filter for the woofer or woofers . Like I said before at 5000 Hz the woofers don't have any real highs left so using a filter to roll the highs off the woofer is pretty much pointless . Also the low pass part of the PXB2:5K is designed to work with a 8 ohm load and since your cabs woofer load is 4 ohms it changes the crossover point for the woofers lower or higher , I'm not sure which but it works that way .

You could use just the high pass part of your crossover by going + and - to the input and then - and + to just the tweeter , that's what I would do if I couldn't get the PXB5K0 .
