CIJ Geddy Lee or Skyline DJ4?

Keep the Geddy AND get a skyline!

You'll regret it if you unload your CIJ Geddy. I have one and I'll never let her go unless it's to trade up to the new MIA Geddy. I didn't really care for the pickups but once I replaced those she became a keeper. The build quality of mine is exceptional.

Do NOT sell your Geddy. You will regret it. Take it from me. My current one is my fourth one and my last one. Each time I sold one, I regretted it immediately. You may not feel like it's for you at the moment, but there will be a time in the future where you'll need it.

DJ4 (at least the old ones with Aeros) were some of the meatier sounding jazz basses I've heard. Had one, loved it... If it's the looks that bother you, I think DJ4 is not for you ;)

Honestly not sure if it is worth the cash to move from a Japanese Fender to a Skyline. The Japanese J basses are some of the ones people always regret selling.

If you wanted to move to a 5 string, I'd definitely suggest a Lakland over a Fender.

Always. Japanese Fenders in general, guitar or bass, are becoming extremely hard to find on the used market and the ones you do find are pretty pricey.

The CIJ Geddy is getting hard to find, I should have picked one up back when they were cheaper, they have amazing necks and plenty of growl. So either way I would keep that.

True. The MIM models are nice, but the CIJ models are king.

I've tried Dimarzio Model Js, and now have Lace Man O War pickups in mine. The Geddy sounded great with both, but I like the Lace pickups better than the Dimarzios.
What sets this bass apart from a lot of other basses I've owned/tried, though, is that it just sounds great acoustically, unamplified.

I had a CIJ Geddy back in '07. The neck was too skinny for me, and the tuners were kind of wonky. (I found the same to be true on a '51 reissue, so I suppose I've never really understood the CIJ love.) I returned it and got a DJ4, which I liked a lot better. Sold that, though, as I just couldn't bond with a J bass.

But that's merely my experience. You love your Geddy--I wouldn't sell a bass I loved simply because of the color. Maybe save up for a refinish?

It's far from JUST the color. If that were it alone I wouldn't even consider the DJ4. That is certainly a part of it because when I picture a Jazz Bass in my head I see a Natural and Maple finish with block inlays. So that is a part of it.

The other thought was that the Lakland may play better or sound better. MAY is of course the qualifier here. I figured the pickups are hotter output and I know they have a great sound so it may just be that one notch up from my Geddy...

But ultimately, I think the Geddy is a keeper and if anything I'm going to save up for a Skyline DJ4 down the line.

Nothing against lakland - I used one for 3 years, and it is good. But i sold it because it just doesn't sound enough like a Fender in the mix (mine had the lakland pickups). If you want a natural and maple finish then you could buy a Bacchus like this one for less (the tone will be better - hand wound pickups, hand made bass)

I dislike the look roundish bridge of the Lakland. If you are bored with the Geddy's look put some decals on it or something. It's only a bass.
I understand GAS but I'm not sure this one merits a switch, esp as u would give up two axes. OTOH, this is just, like, my opinion, man.

Make your way to a music store that caries the DJ4, play em both side by side, note: you won't be able to make adjustments and set the DJ up to your liking in the store so keep that in mind! The DJ has been Plek'd!!! This means that the fret levelling/nut trim etc is done by machine for optimal playability, also Lakland takes great pride in their bases, I own the DJ ( skyline) and personally choose it over a Geddy, the Geddy lee feels cheap in comparison ( hardware, built etc ( painted block inlays?? lol ) again all come down to personal preference!!! Only YOU will know! **** my 2cents****

I do not like 'Signature Models'- I like to do my own thing.

I used to be the same way until I realized that damn near every company, but especially Fender makes their best or at least most interesting models as "Signature" models... So honestly I could care less who's signature is on the headstock. They all become "Esoge Signature Models" when I play em :)

I have yet to buy one because of who's name was on... In most cases I had to "get over" who's name was on it and buy it anyway cause it was just a better bass

Well the fretless is getting sold either way. I'm just not a fretless player yet (or maybe ever) and I'd rather see my nice Franken-Fender Fretless go to good use... It's an inexpensive quality fretless... That'll be up on here soon if I can't find a local buyer
