CIJ Geddy Lee or Skyline DJ4?

I love my CIJ Geddy Lee!

Yeah they make sweet looking basses. But they also play very very well. The quality is higher than a Skyline, but since the yen is weak right now you can get 3x the bass for great prices. I post about them way too much simply because I think a lot of people here will be very happy with these, and many do not know about them.

I had a GL CIJ 6 years ago, it was not the quality I expected from Fender. The neck profile was super thin and flat, it made my hand cramp and was continually getting out of line.
It could as well been a bad one but I would not buy another one, I would indeed like to get my hands on a Skyline DJ5 in my case.
I have too many basses to justify one more but if I could the DJ5 it would be.

I lucked into a more recent MIJ 2010 model Geddy Lee.

It is what it is, and a player should expect a thin neck and C shape profile before ever considering one. It won't be for everyone, and that is why there are other instruments on the market.

For me, it might be the one bass I never get rid of. I treat it as a Jazz bass, and expect no more out of it. It won't replace my P-bass or Sterling; and I never expected it to.

However, if one is interested in finding a Japanese version of this instrument; that player should not wait around. They are getting harder to find and the price is increasing.

So I guess you're no longer endorsing lakland?

It's far from JUST the color. If that were it alone I wouldn't even consider the DJ4. That is certainly a part of it because when I picture a Jazz Bass in my head I see a Natural and Maple finish with block inlays. So that is a part of it.
Not to knock the Skylines, because they are really nice instruments, but a few years ago, when I was jonesing for the natural/maple/block thing, I ended up with a Fender CIJ JB75. Not the same as the Geddy, obviously, but still a great bass. Still lots of 'em out there on the pre-owned market, too.
