Dingwall Owners Club

Nice bass! Welcome to the club!

If the pickups are factory they will be passive and neodymium. The preamp would be EMG.
Your bass should run in passive without a battery if all is factory wiring. Perhaps popping the cavity cover off and posting a photo could help.

It should also be quite silent which does raise the question of, “have any kids been done?”

That or worn pots or just static? I hear a bounce sheet wipe down will help remove static which can happen on basses with pick guards
I heard this but with a new microfiber

Is anyone rocking a wenge neck on an ABZ? Does it cause any neck dive? I had wenge on my D-Roc and it was absolutely fine, but the D-Roc is probably a heavier bass with a difference balance point than the Afterburner.

Currently have a deposit down on a new build and trying to decide wenge vs roasted ash on an ABZ or AB1. I don't believe in tonewoods so just picking based on appearance and feel.
My ABZ has the wenge neck. Absolutely zero neck dive despite the bass being so lightweight (8.1# if memory serves). I personally love the feel of the wenge necks as well, and it is absolutely rock solid stable. I have a deposit down on a build. When it is time for final specs, I'm leaning towards another wenge neck.

Dude! Sweet! I have a Super J with wenge neck/board and it’s the only bass I’ve ever had whereby the neck doesn’t move regardless of weather etc.

Does it normally take awhile to hear from @Sheldon D dingwall guitars ?
Sent an email last week but just curious
I don't think most folks are trying to talk to Sheldon directly.
Tech usually seems very responsive anytime I've worked with them. I'm also never in a big rush, so if it takes a day or two I don't really notice.
When I'm in queue and working through order specs and questions, I go through my dealer. It adds a step, but, it's the "right" way to do it (and keeps your dealer in the loop).

Sorry that’s what I meant I did email tech but no response

I just had a conversation with Ryan at Dingwall (tech) about neodymium vs. ALNICO pick-ups. It took a few days for the first reply, but from this moment on, we had a fluid, polite and very enlightening conversation after which I bought two P-Tones :)
I'd say give them time, they will respond and they will be very helpul. I had a very nice experience and I don't see any reason why you shouldn't.
DIngwall is top-notch and tech-support really helpful.

It's crazy how light the ABZ can get. I think maybe I am worried about nothing, I think I remember reading on this thread that Dingwall confirmed a wenge neck is only about about 50 grams more than the standard 5 piece maple. And that's nothing since the weight only matters for neck dive if its past the balance point at the 12th fret.

Edit: the +50 grams for wenge is from Dingwall's website.

+1

My ABZ5 (maple neck) weighs a smidge under 8-lbs! :bassist:

When you factor in the amazing balance of the the designs themselves, I think it does not make any difference which neck you choose. My first DBird that I sold (I found another and snatched it up - it has the maple neck and wenge fb) had the solid wenge neck and it balanced perfectly. Considering how much of a challenge a non-neck diving thunderbird body is, Sheldon made that work too!
